Trying to get some ideas for trips next season. Friends we travel with are set on Asheville, NC, while I was more interested in north east GA, around Helen.
I've read a bunch on line and here but didn't find anything to answer my question of what exactly is there to do in Asheville? After driving over 600 miles I want to do more than sit in the CG. Any comments?

States we have visited and camped in
Near the river that flows through town are several "art studios"
Actually pretty much anything ,paintings, quilts, pottery, etc.
We stopped at the Potters Mark and my wife bought a few pieces, hand made on sight.
We spent quite a while there, just talking as much as shopping
The proprieters there are quite friendly and like to talk about there craft.

I'm not a big fan of Asheville, it's pretty "hippie", but that maybe for you. If you do visit, don't miss the Biltmore. Another attraction that we always enjoy is Chimney Rock. It used to be private owned (my father used to work for the owners, so we went a lot when I was a kid), but now it's owned by the state. It is very close to lake Lure, where Dirty Dancing was filmed. You can even stay at the same resort where the movie was filmed, but I've heard it's not worth the money. Anyway, the area is very scenic, and if nothing else, the scenery is worth seeing.
Hiking, biking, strolling through downtown Asheville. Downtown Hendersonville is also nice (30 minutes away). But my favorite and I live three miles from the airport is Transylvania county. Land of the waterfalls, numerous waterfalls to walk to or drive by. Beautiful area. I suggest doing a search for Cascade lake recreation area, Davidson river , or Brevard and see what you come up with.
Biltmore house is also a must see. Enjoy the winery and the estate while you are here.
A bad day camping is better than a great day at work....

Biltmore. If you do it do the behind the scenes tour too. I would go to Ashville over Helen Ga. any day. As stated above there is a lot to do there and the surronding areas.

Asheville is a very "artsy" place, but it is a wonderful city. There are lots of shops and galleries to go to. Whitewater rafting, the Biltmore House, a spa day at the Grove Park Inn, waterfalls, bowling, movies, malls, you name it. Once in Ashevile, drive over to Waynesville (35 minute ride) and go to the shops and galleries downtown. Maggie Valley is also another place everyone seems to come to. Hendersonville is another city people like to come to. A lot of the cities have festivals, shows and arts and crats shows going on almost throughout the entire year. In Flat Rock there is a playhouse that has shows periodically---you just have to do your research and get guides from the chamber of commerce or visitors bureau. I have been through Helen, GA. Very pretty, but unless you are an outdoorsy person who likes to spend a lot of their day hiking and walking to see all the nature, Asheville and the surrounding cities will give you many more opportunities to get out of the cg. Heck, if you don't mind driving 2 hrs over to TN to the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area, there is plenty of outlet shopping, shows and fun things to do. Fun is all in what you make it and what your interests are.
Boat Tour of Lake Lurie was interesting. We also did the trolley tour and enjoyed that. The Biltmore is very expensive in my view. They wanted $42 a person for the tour I think.
Both retired. 1 year until son finishes college, then financial freedom! We lost Max, the Schnoodle after 16 wonderful years but now enjoy Nicklaus Von Schnoodle (Nicky), who is a full time job. Our new Allegro Bay 34 XB is wonderful.
