Hey there,

I have a 2007 Chevy 2500 HD with 12,000 miles on it. The truck is completely stock for the most part. I was wondering if replacing the rear shocks with Bilsteins is worth it to improve ride quality while towing? Or should I just wait another 20k to replace these?

GM has been buying pretty whimpy shocks for their products, but 12k is a bit short. When you do buy new HD shocks, get four. If you stiffen the rear, it'll just pivot on the rear and cause the fronts to work up & down more.

What is your problem...maybe there's another solution for it.

All men over age 50 should get an annual PSA blood test. Mine had a low reading, but the yearly jump was significant. The biopsy showed cancer just entering the aggressive stage. Dr. Hackenslash removed it.

It's my contention that one of the first things one should do with a new vehicle is upgrade the shocks. The oem pieces are pretty much garbage when they are installed. I think you'd probably be amazed at what a set of Bilsteins would do for your truck. After you get the rears installed I think you'd just go ahead and pick up a set for the fronts immediately afterwards.

We replaced our shocks with-in the first 5,000 miles. The old shocks were really not very good - once they were off I could move the shock stem in and out quite easily - could hardly budge the Bilsteins. Put on four Bilsteins - very happy with them. Ordered them from shockwarehouse.com for about $280.00.

Here's another vote for Bilstein's. You won't regret it if you replace them TODAY! - Dave

The last Chev truck I had, in 2000, had to replace the shocks at 5K miles. They were totally worn out.

When I first bought my truck (new) I was disappointed that the shocks already felt worn out. Nevertheless, I waited to replace them with Bilsteins for 12k miles. When I backed out of the driveway for the first time with the new shocks I realized I had waited 12,000 miles too long. Unless GM has upgraded their HD shocks considerably since '03 I'd recommend you replace them (all four, per Ken) now.

Alright well , I must say im sold on new ones.

Now...what are the odds you think I could change them out myself? I dont have 4wd. Just the standard torsion bar setup or do I need some serious tools?

Anyone done it them selves?

Changing shocks is easy. Just remove the bolts top and bottom. Since they don't hold the truck up--the springs do that--you don't need to support anything.

Your truck is new enough that the bolts will probably come off without much trouble. Go for it.
