TH TEAM - I am confused on why a 4WD pulls less than a 2WD? Please help a boy from Mississippi understand this math!

4wd is heavier, thus diminishing your towing capacity.

Usually 4X4 is about 500 pounds less tow capacity.

The extra weight is deducted from the total that the vehicle can pull.

Thanks for the clarification - I guess the real question is - do most TH's have 2 or 4WD - is 4WD needed to get these rigs on and off the trail?

Having 4x4 available when you need it is worth every pound.

I wouldn't go offroad especially in the sand without 4wd. Worth it everytime.

I went cheap and bought the 2WD (if you can really call my truck "cheap"). I stretched the budget as far as I could for this TV and couldn't swing the price tag for the diesel AND the 4WD.

I've regretted it a couple times. On one trip it had rained really hard and the roads into Dove Springs were muddier than usual. I was meeting some friends out there and couldn't get down the road into the bowl where they camped. So one of my friends came out in his 4WD and towed my trailer in. I wasn't too crazy about that.

I've been in a couple other spots where 4WD would have relaxed some of my pucker-factor.

I'm going out this weekend to a spot where I've never been with six miles of partially sandy roads. Hopefully it's no big deal, but I wouldn't be stressing it if I had 4WD. I'm having the kids all skip their last classes tomorrow so we can leave early enough to get there before dark. If I'm going to get stuck, I want the pictures to come out well. And if I'm going to have to ride into camp and get someone to pull me out, I want to start that process before happy hour gets too far underway. I wouldn't have to leave early if I weren't sweating the roads.

So have I regretted the 2WD? Yep, plenty of times. I love my truck, but if I had it to do over again, I'd spend the extra few $$$ and get the 4WD. Can you get along fine without it? You bet. We've never missed a trip we wanted or skipped a destination because I didn't think we could get in (and out).

Your call.

I've been stuck even with 4wd but managed to get unstuck w/o help. Sometime the ground is softer than it looks, I wouldn't go without it.

Dont worry Dave, there will be plenty of friends there to laugh... i mean, help you out if you do get stuck! See ya there bro!

Yeah, 4wd helps keep the front of the truck from just plowing into the soft stuff... even the narrowest pizza cutter tire would be better with 4wd. Pony up the $$$ for the 4wd, dont worry about the weight... if you are with in 500lbs of your Gross... a 1/4 ton wont help/hurt much. DOnt be a cheap skate like Dave here...
