I usually wear hiking boots & socks as the truck is big and we have the camper and trailer. I found driving the Saturn Ion around without shoes is bad for my heels, but I can do it in a small car. Big Truck with lots of hauling - want the stability of good shoes.

Soft moccasins are my choice when driving the rig. Comfort but some protection.

I drive barefoot often, legal in all fifty states. I also hike, run, and walk barefooted much as possible. Really, which makes more sense, strapping a board to your foot, or allowing it to flex as intended? It would be ridiculous to strap a board on each hand wouldn't it?
I definitely do not recommend driving with flip/flops, they can be dangerous in my opinion.
Read about the barefoot lifestyle here.
BTW many of us have seen signs stating that "barefeet are prohibited by order of the health department". That is an outright lie, the health department generally requires footwear for employees in food establishments but there are no such regulations on customers.

We were in an accident and I was barefoot as a passenger. I got out of the vehicle and there was broken glass everywhere which I stepped on and cut my feet in several places. Never go barefoot again. I always keep my cell phone on my person as well - everyone elses phones but mine were lost in the collision.

I don't think any state requires any kind of footwear when operating a motor vehicle EXCEPT....motorcycles. I think every state requires footwear on a motorcycle.

We usually take our shoes off when we get in the mh, so we both drive either barefoot or in socks. We keep slippers in there for cooler weather, but I don't wear them to drive.

Can you cite an authority on that please?
Driving without footgear means you have a greater sense of the pressure on the pedal, Now, I can understand where SOME people might have an issue with the brakes should they have to "Stand on them" but the key word there is "Some"
That said: I drive with shoes on, mostly because that is how I'm dressed when I climb into the driver's seat and I'm not taking them off just to drive.
Oh yes: Though I did not see it, I suspect someone may come up with a line about it being illegal to drive barefoot. If you are going to post that, please post a link to the chapter and verse of the state law involved. I know of no such law and I, and others, have searched.
If it were all that dangerous.. I'm sure there would be such a law.
I do recall,,, years and years ago, reading about The Mobile Economy Run. A reporter for a Automotive (Popular Mechanics IIRC but it might have been a different mag) was invited to be a driver in the run. He told how they wore shoe tops (Shoes with the sole removed) because it was illegal to drive barefoot.
Police officer then told me "No such law". I've done some research since (mostly here in Michigan) and find.. The officer was right!
Oh, another factor in the barefoot/wear shoes: If I go barefoot several of my doctors will disown me. (I'm under doctors orders to not go so much as to the bathroom barefoot, and for good solid medical reasons I happen to agree with fully)

And illegal in some states, used to be here in WA, but don't know for sure now. It may have changed
