Anybody here suffer from eye floaters? I started noticing mine about a year ago. Doctor says not much I can do aside from try and ignore them or have risky eye surgeries. I can still see ok, read etc. but are very distracting especially looking at light colored backgrounds such as the sky. There are at least 20-30 little strands and clumps in each eye that move around in the eyes, kinda chasing what I am focusing on.
If anybody has experience with them, and especially with anything you have found that helps them, your info would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Greg

I have had em' for years but when I had a tear in one of my retinas a year or so ago, I since have a few more.
Not a big bother but sometimes I think someone is sneeking up on me from the side. My wife says that I have had invisible friends for a long, long time before "floaters".
Hummm.....How can I make the DW invisable??

Quote: Most spots and floaters in the eye are harmless and merely annoying. Many will fade over time and become less bothersome. People sometimes are interested in surgery to remove floaters, but doctors are willing to perform such surgery only in rare instances.
However, the sudden appearance of a significant number of floaters, especially if they are accompanied by flashes of light or other vision disturbances, could indicate a retinal detachment or other serious problem in the eye. If you suddenly see new floaters, visit your eye doctor immediately.

....I've had them for 30 years, although they seem to have subsided somewhat. I have thought for some time it had something to do with spending a lot of time in the sun and a less than healthy life style, both having been remedied. I've had a complete and thorough eye exam and found my eyes to be fine.......

I've had them the worst is when you are about to take a sip of water or tea and you see a little black spot and can't tell if there is something in the drink or it's my eyes!! Doctor told me they were harmless just annoying.

I have had them for several years - small dots, one fairly good sized black one and one large one that looks like a square of lace. Each new one caused me to be aware of all of them for quite some time, but I learned to look past them at least 90% of the time. My eye doctor says the same thing as yours. (of course I am probably considerably older than you and other respondents to this thread)

PSD has given you an excellent link.
I've had them for years. They used to bother me a lot when I first noticed them, but I never even see them now.
I'm not sure if they have faded some, or if I have simply learned to "look past them" and not keep checking to see if they are still there.
They are perfectly normal, unless a lot of them appear suddenly.

While a few floaters are not unusual, "20 or 30" floaters all at the same time are unusual. I understand they're actually little bits of blood. You may be a good candidate for outpatient laser surgery to cauterize the offending blood vessels around the perimeter of the retina. Ask an opthamologist.

Funny this topic came up. Just today, I had an eye Dr appointment. Had Lasik done in 1998 and have not been back to an eye Dr since.
I too have had floaters for many years and they are very annoying. Seems I either notice them more now or atleast concentrate on them more now so I mentioned them during his exam and upon completion of all the tests, said I was good to go with 20/15 in left eye, 20/20 in right eye. (Big improvement over 20/200 in 1998).
Said they are very common and only under drastic conditions do they do surgery. Something about cutting the eye open and removing something and installing something new in there that made me realize they may not be as bad as I was making them out to be.

Thanks to all that have posted. I have been stressing about them for the last few months. I should have gone to the doctor and learned more about them sooner. I had fears I was losing my sight. Mine seem maybe worse then most, but not nearly as bad as other people I have talked to. There is always reason to be thankful I suppose no matter what the circumstance.
After reading everything I could find on the Internet it seems that the two medical procedures available are laser and a procedure where the gel inside the eye is pulled out and replaced with a solution. From what I have read this is more of a last resort where vision is badly effected. The laser surgery according to the the doctors web site only works on small number of large floaters. The laser basically blasts it into small pieces. I have a large number of smaller floaters.
I am a believer in the power of positive thinking. I have read that people can to some degree block them out of their mind and see them less often.
In any case, thanks again to those who posted with their experiences.
Greg
