Looking to buy a new or late model bike for my 22 year old daughter. She had been on our 2005 Honda CRF150, which was fine but she would really like an electric start. Anyone have knowledge of differences between the following: 2006 CRF150-F, Yamaha TTR125, Suzuki DRZ125? We ride trail, and desert. No racing, etc. We're not into any brand-centric baloney; we have a KTM200EXC, KDX220, KX100, CRF230 & CRF150-F. I really couldn't care less about riding red, blue, orange, green, etc.

I love my Suzuki DRZ 400, not sure how the 125 compares. I haven't been riding long, so my knowledge is limited, but I am curious if a 150 or less is still going to be enough power for her?

CAPT....the guys on Thumpertalk are pretty knowledgable for the most part if you want to get ALOT of input, most of it brand loyal.
I'd move up to a 230 at least. My 15 year old daughter (5 foot 2 with boots) is on the TTR125L, big wheel version w/ E start. I also put quality YZ-85 suspension on it, which made a big difference. Anyway, there are times when she could use a lil' more power (not speed) but she doesn't ride with that "crazy MX" mentality. The TTR has been stone cold reliable and has great climbing ability.
We went and looked at the Yamaha and Honda 230 models last week and the blue one looks like a pig while the red one still looks like a dirt bike. They both have E start as well. If she gets to the point where she wants to ride more on the edge, I'll probably get her a KTM 250 4 stroke down the line.

The new Kawasaki KLX140 and KLX140L look pretty cool. I was doing some research on them and they seem to have some really nice features. Electric start of course, but is also seems like they have taken some of the parts from their KX bikes and put them on these also. They have dual disc brakes and larger fork tubes than the other bikes of similar size. My dealer said they should be arriving in November. For only $100 more than the Yamaha, it seemed like a good deal for the better suspension and brakes. I guess I will see next month.
Good luck in your bike shopping.

I just bought a 08 WR450 and love it.. I was going to go with a 250 and looked at all the models of all brands. After a few months of looking and reading the WR250 was the winner. E-start Spedo trip meter and just an all around great bike. The way they are setup from the factory with emissions I think that this is a good size. And if she decides in a year she wants more power just replace the the end of the pipe, unscrew the throttle stop and she with have twice the power..

She's fairly short, about 5'3". Our CRF230 feels like too much bike to her, so a WR250 wouldn't be in the ballpark. She is not an agressive rider. Needs something as light as possible, and not tall. She got really discouraged last trip because she couldn't lift the bike back up on a hill, and then kickstart it. I just want a fun bike for her, to keep her interested in going with us, not one that will intimidate her.

My wife, 5' 0" on a TALL day! She has a Yammie TTR125LE. It is easy to ride and can be tweaked for more power, but it ain't a 230/250. If she is too short for the stock CRF230F, maybe talk to the shop and get a shorter dogbone (rear suspension piece) and lower the fork tubes.

Pretty cool, but it's also pretty heavy. I'd go with the HUSQVARNA TE 250 which is also EFI, street legal and 50lbs lighter. Heck, the Yami is 30lbs heavier then my street legal 525.
To answer the original question, the TTR-125LE looks pretty good, though I'm not happy with the rear drum brake. The Honda CRF150F seems comparable, again with a rear drum. I think I'd look seriously at the CRF150R. It has all the suspension and braking plus a fairly low seat height.

For a girl that age, I think I'd dial in the suspension on a CRF230 before I'd get the TTR125 (even the LE). We upgraded my daughter last year from the TTR125 to the CRF230. She was 12 at the time and just outgrew the 125. Her skills have really improved so far this season.
