Planning a trip to SD this summer as our main destination. Would like to go north and then across Montana with a sideways stop in Medora, ND (Rooselfelt Park)and then via Highway 2 through Glasgow Mt and Havre MT. Any roads issue if I route us that way? Ugly passes or really bad roads?? Two Gas MHs making this safari. Thanks for any information.

I don't recall any passes to speak of on that route but you may find that highway 89 (I believe that's the number) West from Browning is curvy but very scenic. I've use the route several times and really enjoy it. There will be one fairly long down hill run into St Marys but again, not much to worry about. I think the grade is rated at 07% but it doesn't seem that steep to me. Good luck / Skip

They are in the process of doing major road work in Glacier Park this past summer which I believe is scheduled to take at least a couple of years. This past summer the going to the sun road was closed about .5 mile east of the summit. If you plan to visit check their construction schedule for next summer. Personally I like west side of the Going to the Sun road best. The #89 from Browning to St. Mary is very, very crooked with some fairly steep grades, but Personally. There is an alternate road that goes north through the Indian Reservation that is very good, no big grades to pull, straight but barren. You may want to go to St. Mary on 89 one way and then take the other route back to Browning to go to Columbia Falls to visit the west side of the park and then carry on the #2 west back to Washington

No ugly passes or otherwise on US 2.

US 2 is fine, on your way to Glacier from Teddy Roosevelt NP, recommend that you visit Fort Union at the confluence of the Yellowstone River with the Missouri, right at the MT/ND border. The hosts make a fine presentation of the history of the place, it was really a big affair back in the 1800's when fur trading was taking place in Montana. You will enjoy it!

Remember you will need your toads or the "Red Bus Tours" to see the Going to the Sun Road (And be sure to see it; one of the most beautiful roads in the country) since there is an 8' width & 21' length limit for driving the full length.
You can check the status of Going to the Sun Road here.
To see why it takes so long to open the road, check out the plowing photos at the bottom of this page.

Gadget Guy was very right. "The #89 from Browning to St. Mary is very, very crooked with some fairly steep grades,"
On our first trip we ran late and drove the route after dark in a fog. It seemed to take forever! Not good if you have weak nerves (I don't, wife does). Our last trip (2006) was in daylight and we had no problems. I would not avoid it, just be sure to arrive before dark. The final grade into St. Mary is steep but did not present a problem.
