All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) (VC §111)—An ATV is a motor vehicle designed for
off-highway operation by an operator with no passengers. An ATV has a single seat
for the operator and handlebars for steering control, is 50 or less inches wide and
weighs 600 pounds or less, unladen. An ATV cannot be converted to on-highway
registration, regardless of aftermarket conversion kits or added equipment.

Rhino != ATV per CVC

(b) Fifty inches or less in width.

(c) Nine hundred pounds or less unladen weight.

(d) Suspended on three or more low-pressure tires.

(e) Has a single seat designed to be straddled by the operator , or a single seat designed to be straddled by the operator and a seat for no more than one passenger.

Amended Sec. 1, Ch. 252, Stats. 2002. Effective January 1, 2003.

So your Rhino has a single seat and handlebars?

Huh??? "!=" means does not equal.

Jay is an executive now and doesn't trouble himself with things like syntax. That's what the little people are for.

I think $60 bucks is a cheap reminder of the rules that we have to live by, and it's definitely a lot better than cracking your head open, or someone else's, while riding in the camp.

My son had 120 stitches and 20 staples on his leg while riding in our back yard last Christmas day, and he was not wearing a helmet or boots and any protection, which he was damn lucky that that was all that happened.

Hey, as one of the little people I bow to his executive status I was just getting worried. I want to buy a Rhino and was thinking how ugly it would be with handlebars

I guess it's true. The higher up the corporate ladder you go, the less you notice the little stuff. Completely missed that...

It's taken a few days to get caught up and get some thoughts together. The Rally was a great time. A four night trip is always a special occasion for us. But four nights with a group like this is unbelievable. It's hard to take it all in.

Some random thoughts in no special order:
  • Huge thanks to Eric and Wendy for putting it all together. You really took care of an amazing number of details: shirts, firewood, tents, goody bags for the scavenger hunt, welcome packets with a printed schedule, raffle items, ... I can't imagine how many yours you two put into this trip. Your efforts sure paid off though. The Rally was outstanding.

  • Had a great ride into Randsburg with a couple families (Jaxclan and TeamBarnum). Mark's (Jaxclan's) family was fun to ride with. I was especially impressed with his young boys. Frankly, I don't like riding with teenage boys. If something's going to go wrong on a group ride, it's usually because one of the younger boys is showing off and gets out of control. I could tell Mark's boys wanted to show what they were made of, but they kept themselves under control. They did a decent job of looking over their shoulders and making sure that the rider behind them was still there. Way to go Jaxclan family. You should be proud of your kids.

We also had Eric & Jil Barnum and family (the producer of the KegMeter) with us. They actually jumped the gun and left with another group. We found them on the side of the road trying to find their way. We added them to our group and had a great ride. Both of these families were a lot of fun to ride with. We were lucky to get tables at the White House; this was the first time I didn't have to wait.

  • I finally got to meet Jeepgeek. He burns bright, but fast. I think we only got one good evening out of him. He sure made his presence known though. Out of cheap tequila for the margarita mix? Switch to rum. Out of rum? Switch to champagne. The champagne bottle is empty? Go bust out the good Cabo Wabo. All those are gone? Skip the group lunch ride the next morning. You didn't disappoint though. By the way, showing up dressed up as my twin for the poker run...how gay was that?!?

    Late night portrait:

  • The Poker Run was a blast. It went a little too fast for my taste though. Maybe next year we can set up concessions at each stop. Kids could make a killing with a desert lemonade stand. I can't believe
Jeffie's kid took the pot though. $370!!! How old is your boy? Heather sure looked excited when I dealt him that full house!

  • Poker Run Setup: Last year it was a real PITA, because we had so much to figure out. This year it was practically a pleasure cruise. Derwud and I drove the course in his Rhino. It was a beautiful afternoon and I made sure the cooler was full. Not that it was all R&R... I walked quite a bit tying off the ribbons on the parts that needed the most marking (especially on Trona Road). But there were some long stretches that didn't need much marking and all I had to do was enjoy the cool afternoon, the sunset, and make sure I didn't spill my beer. After we finished marking the course, we cruised by Strabo's compound. Jim wasn't home, but everyone else yelled at us that we were going to get tickets for no helmets and my open container. Sorry Viking for landing my nearly full beer in your lap. Thanks for the replacement. I obviously didn't leave too bad of an impression, because you introduced yourself to me again at the fire later on. A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

  • Thanks Phil for the pink tape for marking off the course. And thanks to whoever swept the course and removed all the ribbons. I was really glad to not have to do the course one more time. I know I tried to draft Chip to do the cleanup job. Chip - Are you the one who ended up doing it? You did a great job. Did you do it in the evening or the morning. I was surprised to see how early it was done.

  • My wife sure has changed her viewpoint on this whole "Internet desert" thing. At the first Rally she was pretty reserved. One night she joined us at the fire and overheard someone introducing herself to me: "Hi, I'm Sandy Feet". Pam rolled her eyes trying to figure out between Marianne and I which of us was the bigger dork. Pam didn't mix much for the rest of that trip. But she's gotten comfortable enough with the whole thing now that she actually wears her RV.NET shirts to the gym. I think she met more new people on this trip than I did. Too bad she had to bail early on Saturday night to go pick up our daughter from her ROTC ball at Edwards. Pam was already burned out when she left camp at 10:00. Somehow she was too sleepy coming back to notice the turnoff at the 58/395 junction. She realized she went too far when she finally hit Barstow. She burned more diesel going back and forth to Edwards than I did driving from home in Santa Clarita to the camp site--she totally ran me out. Luckily there was $3.85 diesel in Jo'burg.

  • The Lauren Lokken fund was a little bit of a disappointment. Very few people followed through with their commitments. I'm very grateful to the ones who followed through though. Very cool.

  • There were a number of people I'd hoped to meet who either didn't show up or we just never connected: Joe/JustPlaneKrazy, Ed/767Capt, and Brandon/bkirkpatrick to name a few. I was also sorry I didn't get more time to
talk to Gilbert (GLMRacer) and his wife (RaptorGirl). We'll just have to go back again next year.
