Sorry if this is old news. I saw my first Ram 5500 on the flat bed of a semi near Flagstaff today. This is what I would buy if I was gonna get a big tc. Sorry for the lousy pictures but my vehicle and the semi were doing @ 60 mph.

The 4500 & 5500 have a heavier frame and the frame is too long for a regular pickup bed as well. If you put a pickup bed on you will have about 4 to 6 inches of space between the rear of the cab and the pickup bed. The frame is a 50,000# tensile strength frame and the 5500 is supposed to be rated at about 14,000 GVWR. The 6.7 CTD and the Aisan tranny are a great driver. You only have to try one once to be convinced. For a HD truck, Dodge is it. And No! I don't work for Dodge.

I have always been a Mopar fan ... but is there a MARKET for something like this ... in this day-and-age of huge fuel prices?

Does this mean that the newer, bog boy TCs for sale will not fit without some frame trimming?

Nope, but there will be a 4 to 6 inch gap between the front of the camper and the back of the cab.

F450/F550 chassis cab trucks have the same issue. A spacer matching the bed profile is inserted. Some put an extra fuel tank in there.

Why would you go with a Dodge 5500 over the Ford 550 Jim? Feel burned by your 6.0 and wouldn't risk it on the 6.4?

I guess it's about time I started checking on the specs, but I wonder if the Dodge is rated as high in towing and GVWR as the 550.

In any case, I'm glad these are finally out to at least compete with the 450/550. I see tons of 450/550's so yes, there is a market for these things.

PS: Jim, this would be a perfect truck to carry your S-10 and camper ON.

Ya Jim, buy the 5500, put the Four Wheel Camper on that and pull the Winnebago with a tow bar.

    GVWR

The rear suspension on two- and four-wheel-drive models is equipped with leaf springs and includes standard two-stage springs as part of the spring design for greater load-carrying capability.

Maximum Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) for 4500 models is 7,484 kilograms (16,500 lbs.).

For 5500 models, the maximum GVWR is 8,845 kilograms (19,500 lbs.). The Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) for both 4500 and 5500 models is 11,793 kilograms (26,000 lbs.).
