Years ago when we rented an RV for a terrific family vacation, we only knew about KOA campsites. We had a few decent ones but others that were...ah....er....filled with some WEIRD and NOISY people.???
what is the general rule of thumb in finding a great site? we have the Passport America book and the Woodall's Directory. This summer will be our first trip in our new MH (36 ft. Winnebago Adventurer)
Help please?

Learn to boondock, and do 'dispersed camping' in forests. No people, no dogs, no blue tarps, no weirdos, no noise. And the best part, no rules.

Now, if you have children who must have a pool, forget the boondocking.

We refer to this site often. Reviews are posted by everyday campers and it's a completely non-commerical site.

Thanks so much. I didn't mean at all to infer there are a lot of weirdos out there. Actually I'm a little strange too. haha But I guess my kids were young then and some people nearby were loud and obnoxious....I guess i classified this as weird.
anyway both my husband and i LOVE people. Our children are grown and we do look forward to meeting great people like i see on this forum.
We want clean and not overly crowded camp sites with quiet time rules etc.
Are KOA sites well liked generally?

I know this varies widely from state to state, but in our area, there are a lot of wonderful state parks.

You will get many answers. Each of us have our own tastes. Mine, I like state parks because they tend to have more trees, etc. that separate the sites from one another. You need a place that has good power, maybe full hookups. Look for a campground that fits your family, like play areas, hiking, pool, and most of all RELAXATION. Anytime that you can, drive through them as you go on other trips. Take photos or keep notes on what you see.

Google the site that you are thinking about. Maybe use Google Earth to get a birds eye view of the surroundings. Pick your travel times. For example, campsites that are near racing events may be a bit more crowded than at other times. Maybe even have a plan B ready, in case you really feel that you need to move on.

You may find that some of your most favorite spots to camp are close to home. And maybe with having family around, you won't notice anyone else and what they are doing.

Take that rv site reviews with a grain of salt. I have to wonder about some of the people who rate a park down because of mosquitos, get real. Look at all the reviews and make your own determination.

State parks, National Forest camp grounds. The farther away from big cities the better. Less rif raf. Smaller the lakes the better too. I have found that boaters don't like small bodies of water, they can't go fast, so that is where I go.

We like the State parks because they are generally more scenic and more economical. Most have a limit of 14 days or so so do not have permanent residents and the problems sometime associated with them. For commercial parks we use rvparkreviews.com to find good ones. As to KOAs, there are good ones and bad ones.

I have been traveling in our MH for 14 years and only found two times that we run into any questionable people Most RV's are great, my choice of camp ground may not be yours.
