I always figure if I go for more than 2 days I'm money ahead VS motels and meals.
Will prices slow me down, I doubt it and am no going to worry about what I can't change.

Nice forum here. Although I don't go that much, maybe two three times a year, high gas prices hurt everyone, (except the rich). I already travel at 60 mph, might try 55 mph, and I think if it keeps going up, perhaps the states will go the other way and reduce speeds again.
Even if I had the money to do so, I would not buy or upgrade into another motorhome.

I now look for areas where I can park the MH and take day trips with my Saturn at 30+ mpg that is not so bad. I will still go camping until other interest win out. I will put my other interests on a back burner and use the monies I save to pay the increase in fuel costs.

dpg4851 wrote: According to the news....if the current trend continues...gasoline will be $4.00 a gallon by next summer...just when we are planning an extended trip...beginning in the spring...
How much effect will this have on most RVer's...do you think....both in travel, sales, and continued ownership?
The ACTUAL cost of "fuel" is not within our ability to control...never has been. BUT.."we" have to learn different ways to "semi offset" the fuel costs IF we wish to continue to drive our rigs.
A typical trip for me from home to say YNP might set me back $1300 for fuel round trip ($3.00 a gallon). We like to stay in CG's; RV resorts..( whatever you wish to call them) that TYPICALLY will set us back AT LEAST $40 a night! We have no problem while "in transit" of staying at various interstate rest stops; truck stops, etc ( NOT Wally World) and then can "save" a minimum of $240 for the trip.
Ever gone out to eat in a town such as West Yellowstone or Jackson WY?? If you do...you'll think that diesel fuel at $4.00 a gallon is a BARGAIN!!! . We'll cook at the RV ( we enjoy grilling out anyway) and save a TON during a 2 week vacation.
We have found "various" places to "camp" that has 50 amp electric ( and not much more in "services" ) with trememdous scenery etc..at $18.95 a night! ( Just a little less than the $40 PLUS a night!!!) That alone would save us $300 for a trip.
So...since I cant control...what I "cant control" ( fuel prices) I'll control what I CAN control ( other expenses)

On the plus side, If fewer people travel, it may help to hold down the per night cost at a campground - right!

That would be nice but I doubt that happens because their costs keep going up, taxes, electric & fuel costs. In other words the cost of a per barrel of oil affects everyone, not just our fuels costs.

From my perspective as a full timer - Sully hit the nail when he talks about 'off setting' the fuel part of the equation.
Back in June we became members of 1000trails - it was a chunk of change and it doesn't suit everyone, but whereas before I had to pay for fuel AND nightly campsite fees, I am now able to stay for 'free' (or at least the amortized buy-in cost).
So for example, we stayed 2 weeks in St George, moved to Vegas, stayed 5 days for free at Outdoor Results (promotion), moved to 1000 trails in Vegas for 2 weeks, off to Parumph for 2 weeks (RoD) and then back to Vegas for another 2 weeks - that's 47 nights (worth $1650) of free FHU camping for $0 - in terms of fuel cost it's probably 100 gallons (cost $350).
It's all about making choices about what you spend you money on and compromising - not something that most of us are very used to.

I'll do what I did last year - found a permanent site on a lake near-by. Took a couple of long trips but for the most part just enjoyed it sitting in one spot.

While fuel costs are a factor here is how I rationalize it:
Fri night family dinner out ~$40-60
Sat night couples night out dinner ~$60, babysitter ~$50
Weekend entertainment at home $150-170
Weekend in the MH:
Camp fees ~$20/night (State or Prov parks)
Food for dinners ~$30
Fuel to get there and back ~$170
Total for a weekend in the MH: ~$240
So to stay home and have a "normal" weekend vs going away and experiencing new stuff we pay an additional ~$70.
Of course I'm conveniently ignoring the MH cost (capital), maintenance, insurance, storage costs. but since my MH is new I have to keep it or face losing a ton of $$ trying to sell it.
Besides, I want to keep the MH. The family time is worth every penny.
For our camping style fuel is relatively minor in cost.
