Planning trips for next year. One state we have not visited is West Virginia. It will be my wife and I with my 5 year old son in a 32' TT with a 18' Superslide. Looking for a nice family campground (water/electric) near an area with things to do. Not much on history stuff, but like biking, water, tubing, and mountains. If you have any ideas, please advise.

Jackson county fairgrounds outside of Ripley is excellent. They have full hook ups and were $10 a night last year when we stayed there.

We stayed at Watoga State Park (water and electric) near Marlinton, WV right on the Greenbrier River. It was very scenic with good drives, mountains (Cranberry Glades), waterfalls and rock formations nearby (Beartown). We also liked Canaan Valley State Park (full hookups) near Elkins, WV. Again, near this park were beautiful mountains, waterfalls (Blackwater Falls) and wilderness areas (Dolly Sods). There are many beautiful areas in West Virginia.

Seneca Rocks and the surrounding Monongahela National Forest are beautiful. There is a National Scenic Area campground opposite the Rocks with hookups and dump station, nice shower houses. Also check out Durbin, Cass and the Cass Railroad, and Thurmond. All are old railroad mining towns restored some, and quite interesting. The Greenbriar River (for canoing) and the Greenbriar River Trail (biking and hiking) are also in the area. At Thurmond you can inquire about rafting the New River. Best advice about traveling WV is to get a DeLorme Gazeteer. There are some beautiful areas and riding the back roads is a joy.

I'm from WV but have been gone for 27 years in the military. Finally moving close early this coming year and can't wait to do some WV camping. All the areas noted are beautiful and the mountains are gorgeous. This thread made me hungry for home. Thanks!

Try any WV state parks, especially ones with the word "resort" in the name like Canaan Valley State Park Resort or Stonewall Jackson State Park Resort. Jackson is the nicest campground I've ever stayed in in over 50 years of camping. Just spent two weeks there in October.

Try the Summersville Lake area. The Army Corps of Engineers has a campground there called Battle Run. This lake is HUGE and is gorgeous. Boating, water sports, diving, white water rafting nearby, nestled in the mountains (it is a mountain lake so it is DEEP). The New River Gorge Bridge is just a short drive away.
I grew up 30 miles from there and Battle Run is the first true campground I ever stayed at. Oh, there is a swimming beach right across from the campground and if you decide you want history, there is lots of that around the area also.
