Hi Folks,
About 6 months ago I bought a brand new fk1900 ragen xtra lite.
It has an onan 4000 that has started to act up, surges and dies.
I took it to the dealer and with out even looking at it they wanted to charge me 500.00 plus labor to replace the carb. 31 hours!!!! They
gave me a bunch of gruff about varnish in the carb but after the first 20 hours it has started to act up. Not covered under warranty.
any suggestios?

Is that the dealer where you bought the trailer? I wouldn't take the gen there. Is there an Onan (or Cummins) service center near you? Contact them and see if they do Onan warranty service.
It's possible that it's a varnish problem (gas sat too long in the carb and went bad), but that's kind of rare in just six months. How often have you run the gen since you bought it? You're supposed to run it a half hour a month (I think) to prevent varnish in the carb.
You should add a fuel stabilizer (Stabil) to prevent the varnish. If you add this to your fuel station, then all of your toys will be protected too.

I'd agree with Dave... contact Onan direct. Here is a link for their nearest service center.
Forced Family Fun... They'll thank you later for it!

Run some Sea Foam through the tank and carb intake. That will let you find out if it is varnish or not for $5.99. Add 2 oz per gallon (1 oz is normal but I have ran it 4 oz to a gallon) to the gas tank and pure from the can into the air intake. This is assuming it will run/restart after it dies. If it has one or more pistons and I own it then it gets Sea Foam. It has just been on the market for 70 years.

Check the spark plug(s). I have an Onan home generator that had very few hrs. on it and was doing the same thing although it is natural gas powered. Cummins Atlantic fixed it after 3 or 4 tries and 3 months. We thought it was a fuel problem also but ended up being the plugs were wasted. I believe it had less than 25hrs. at the time. Been perfect ever since. Plugs aren't cheap though....at least for mine. Hope this helps!

My 5500 developed a similar problem after an oil change.....I was able to talk to an independent Onan tech who offered the following advise...Find the spring on the carb linkage that is attached on one end to the carb and the other end to a small bar that has notches on it.....looks something like a short hack saw blade....Move the spring to the other end of the notches.....I did this and it fixed my problem.....you can move the spring back a few notches toward where it originally was and test for the same problem.
Hope this works for you?

Wild Bill brings up a good point...
Do you have the Altitude adjustment set correctly? It could be that it's worked fine for you at lower altitudes (beach camping, etc.) but doesn't work for you in the high desert. I leave mine set at 3,000 most of the time, but adjust it down if I'm boondocking at lower elevations.

Call Rage'n in Riverside, CA and take it to them directly. I'm sure they will take care of it with little hassle.

If your TH is only 6 mo. old there is no way your Onan shouldn't be under warrenty. I had a similar problem with my Onan 4000 after about 8 mo. I took my WW to a Camping World that was an Onan Service Center and they replaced the Onan fuel pump to solve my surging/dying problem. Haven't had a problem in the last two years.
