What can we do for extra freezer space? Would like to put one in the basement for our trip to Arizona in January but afraid things might thaw if it isn't real cold.

I have a 5'(cubic feet) upright freeze in my washer/dryer space. Run it on an inverter when not on shore power. It would probably be OK to not have on it AC power during the day, while traveling.

States I have spent the night in my current rig, bought three years ago.
Have RV'ed through 49 states and been in all 50, just short of my half-century.

We have a small upright freezer that sits in the corner of our slide out, we have a MH. We have gone 8 - 12 hours without having shore power and everything was still well frozen. We don't open the freezer door while we are traveling, the freezer is usually very full, everything is frozen very hard before we unplug from the electric.

You should be ok with a freezer staying cold, unless you plan on dry camping several days before plugging into electric again. I think you can go about 24 hours before stuff is completely thawed.

Safe travels,

Judy

We're new to this. How does the invertor work? Is it like a generator?

You might want to check out Compactappliances.com. We bought a "medicial freezer". It was like a apartment size refrigator; but it was a freezer. It fits nicely in our basement. It does a better job freezing things than the one in the rig. It's not as expensive as some found in Camper Supply stores.

CON-verter converts 120 volts to 6 or 12 volts or less.

IN-verter inverts 6 or 12 volts to 120 volts.

When using an inverter for a freezer, you want to be sure to look at the output of the inverter making sure you have enough to run the freezer. Low voltage will burn out the compressor if the inverter is not big enough.

We just put a 5 cubic ft freezer from Sears for $169 in the place of 2 of the dinnette chairs. Seems to stay frozen solid for longer than we want to be on the road during the day then plug in again at night.
