I talked to a crane operator who routinely tows a ford f-150 truck with auto transmission. Heater on full and window cracked open to let out the heat. 75000 miles and no problems. What does a lube pump cost? Lube pump cost- few gallons of gas, which is best?

Blue Marble:

In Canada people do not idle their cars for hours on end. Maybe 15 minutes once in a while. I dont care what they told you at the dealership this is a bad practice. I am sure they were correct that the trannie will be lubricated but it is not good for any engine to be idled for hours on end. I hope I never end up buying one of your vehicles as a used car!!!

I have used a Remco lube pump towing a 2001 PT Cruiser for over 100,000 with no problems.
One time the alarm did go off intermitnely. Stoped and found it was caused by a loose connection on the sending unit. The pump was still running.
Repaired the conection and now include a check of all connections on the system as part of regular service.

I had a remco transmission pump installed on our PT Cruiser by a professional. It went out twice the first year and had to be replaced each time. I have towed it about 6 thousand miles since the last replacement and all is well. The warning lights and buzzer alerted us and we pulled over quickly, there was no damage to the car. The first time I was in Yuma, AZ and was on the road again in about 4 hours. The second time in Wisconsin it took a week. I asked how many I had to go through before they would give me a spare to carry. They didn't think that was funny. They told me that only about 2 percent fail, I guess I am just lucky.

Simply don't do it. Been there, done that, not reliable. I had one installed on my PT Cruiser since I already had the vehicle when I began RV'ing. Added the Remco Lube Pump. It worked fine for about 2 years. Then had to replace the pump. Then had several intermittent "false alarms". It doesn't take but one to lose confidence in this arrangement real fast. And you have an expensive transmission at stake.

After towing with the lube pump for any modest length of time, the transmission in the car would shift noticeably hard for a day or so. I'm told this is due to the difference in the pressure between the lube pump and the car's transmission pump and the computer controls. Again, this grew old quick. It caused me to have my toad tranny serviced more frequently out of concern though maybe needlessly. But when you don't know, what are you going to do?

Get a tow dolly and rest easy. It is only a slight bit more to load. But you can then tow virtually any front wheel drive vehicle. I switched to the dolly and have no regrets.

Remco seems to have lost their interest in customer service. There are too many stories of these pumps failing. I wonder where they are sourcing the hydraulic pumps? China? There is no reason one of these pumps would function for less than 2000 hours. That would translate to 100,000 miles of towing!! There are lots of hydraulic pumps large and small that last over a decade with no problems.

My experience has been that this product (REMCO LUBE PUMP) is the biggest piece of junk on the market. At least I'm comforted that I'm not the only one that's been duped.

First pump failed after using it a little over 2 years. Only about 5,000 miles on it. I had to purchase a replacement, and had it next-day-air delivered to me at St Petersburg, FLA. I used it over a year, when it began to sound louder, noisier.

We're getting ready to head out to take our Grandchild camping at Ocean City, Maryland, so I figured I'd better check it. Today I discovered it is not working at all.

The people who engineered this pump have to be geniuses - or just crooks. The ones I purchase can't last much over 2 yrs, so no wonder they only have a ONE YEAR warranty.

And on this 2nd pump, I only had about 3,000 miles on it!
My next tow vehicle will definitely NOT REQUIRE OR USE ANY REMCO PRODUCTS. (And their answering machine says "God Bless", HUH?) Gotta love it.
