My element went out, ( I think) anyway I the old one is a 1400 Watt and went to Lowes and only could find a 1500 Watt. Do you know if this will work, or will it be too much for the little relay box thingy that the wires come out to goto the heating element. It is a Atwood Hot Water Heater, 10 Gallon. Thank's for the advice...

The 1500 should be good. It will only draw less than 1 amp more. The relay has more reserve than that.

Carefully compare the reach inside the tank and the demensions and be sure you substitute doesnot touch the tank walls.

That is different too, I forgot to bring that up, the new one is shorter that the old one, about 1 1/2 inches shorter.

Shorter is better than Longer! At least in this case!

One thing to check is the voltage of the element at Lowes. It may be a home heater element rated a 240 Volts AC. Your Atwood is probably rated at 120 Volts AC. They are not interchangeable.

I replaced the 1440 watt element in my heater with a 1500 watt unit bought at the local hardware store. It was a bit shorter and has worked fine for over two years. The original one popped when I forgot to turn off the switch when I drained the tank in preparation for winterizing. Won't do that again.

I have been unable to get mine out with element wrench and a ratchet. I'm wondering if anybody has evere tried o drill them out or can suggest alternative ideas?

MikenDebbie,

I had a real problem getting a 7 year old element out, so I attached a 1 1/4 inch pipe nipple, a pipe cap and a nut to the flimsy socket made for the heating element. I tack welded these together and I was able to twist the old element out fairly easily. I put the new one in with teflon tape.

Good luck,

Mike
