According to my owner's manual, I should change the oil in the Onan (5.5 KW) in my 2007 WW FS2600 at the first 20 hours. I went under the trailer today and the oil filter seems easily accessible. Is changing the oil and filter on these as straight forward as it seems? I was quoted $90 by Giant RV to do the service but if I can do it myself I would just as soon do that. Oil filters are about $11. How much oil capacity do these have?

It's very easy, less than 30 minutes. Depending on how your genny sits in your rig the drain port may not drip to the ground. I cut the top of a 1 gallon milk carton off and use the bottom to catch the oil. They hold two quarts.

Yes, do the first change at 20 hrs. You might need a CUP type oil filter wrench that fits over the bottom of the filter and has a 3/8" square hole to use a 3/8" ratchet to get the filter off, as it is recessed and you can't get a hand grip on it. The oil drain should be the little Pet Cock valve right next to the fill opening and the oil drains out the bottom through a hose. Check in your Onan Manual for documentation and helpful tips, capacities, and grade of oil to use. Easy job that I would never pay $90.00 to have someone else do it. Although they will tell you that they do a complete check on the whole gen set for that price, if it is working all right what do you need to check at 20 Hrs of use? Read the Manual and go for it!!!

I've done all the oil changes on my Onan generators on two rigs. Very easy to do. As othertonka said the cup type oil wrench works ok, though sometimes I need to wrap duck tape around it for a better grip. I buy all the Onan parts at my dealer, filter and oil and takes me about 30 minutes.

I just changed the oil for the first time Saturday. WW FTL 4005 Onan 5500. Reading the above posts, I agree easy. Make sure you have the right filter tall slim one, and you will need the cap type wench, with a 3/8 drive.
2 quarts with filter, about $20.00. Gives you $70.00 to spend on some new toy for your rig.

It's an easy job once you get the hang of it. What I did to help drain the oil was I got some clear hose, it's either 3/4 or 1 inch hose, and it fits nice and tight over the drain hose. After putting the clear hose over the drain hose, I put the over end in my oil pan. Turn the petcock and the oil drains down to the oil pan without dripping anywhere. Then you wait until you can't see any more oil in the clear hose and tighten up the petcock again. Change the filter, add two quarts of oil, and you're done.
