Just bought a new RV, in the USA. Saved $18,401........Easy as pie transaction, 20 mins at the border. Just waiting to get final inspection done at Cdn Tire.

I tried to send you a PM but got blocked;
Just saw your post about buying a MH in the US. We've had our 5th wheel for 5 seasons now but we considering going to a Class A towards the end of next summer.

I'm finding much better deals in the US. Where did you get your new MH?

This fall a neighbor and myself were in the market for large (16KW) generators for our farm and ranch. The price from my electrical wholesalers was $5250, from an official, local, Generac dealer $6600! Shopped on the web and found the same one from a US distributer for $3400. At that price I got three other neighbors interested and we ordered 5 units. These were shipped free to our choice of destination near to the border, where we picked them up, paid GST (no duty as these items are made in the USA) and proceeded home. When I asked our local dealer why he was charging $6600 for the identical unit he said he has to pay customs and duty. What a big lie!!! A brokerage fee of lets say $200 per genset doesnt justify doubling the price!

Maybe not - what did it cost you to drive to the border and retrieve your gensets? It's the cost of transportation and customs brokerages.
Does he deserve a fair profit? Everyone in biz does, so what's your beef?

I guess you consider fifty percent a fair markup?

I bought a Maxairre fan a couple of years ago,my local dealer wanted three times the price of a Michigan dealer that I pass on the way to Florida.
Like to guess where I bought?

59022........Each one of us paid the one neighbor who picked up the gensets $40 to do so and bring them back. We took a flat deck 1ton truck and did the round trip in 5 hours.

Heck yes - 50% is nothin! 50% markup is what most auto parts dealers make; 50% markup is what most terminal tackle is sold for at the tackle shop; 50% markup is what most clothing is sold for at Marshalls & TJ Max; 100-200% markup in most of the high end retailers.

Whatta ya think it costs to raise bison these days? Ain't no free lunch on the range anymore. Costs about $2.50/lb to raise them and I get $4/lb at the auction. You pay $13.99/lb for that tenderloin. Ya think that 300% markup is a fair one? How about sheep? $2/lb to raise, $3/lb at auction, you can buy all rack of lamb you want for $9.99/lb, even at Wally World. But, I don't see anyone complaining about it.

You either buy or don't, but someone else will.

The issue is not what is a fair mark-up from manufacturer to retailer, it the difference between retailers. If I can get an identical product (brand, model etc...) from two different retailers and one is 50% higher than the other, it begs the question that Sea Dog is asking.

I'm in the jet engine parts business and we require good margins to be able to re-invest in product development; remember that good margins do not necessarily mean significant profits. This being said, we still need to be competitive in the marketplace with others who also make our products; I cannot sell something if the guy next door is 50% less.

Your bison scenerio is not a good one.
What does a bison dress out, fifty or sixty percent?
At fifty percent you are up to eight dollars for the animal before you cost in the trucking, slaughter costs, cutting and retail costs.
How many pounds of tenderloin do you get from a carcass?

Maybe you should get out of farming and get on the gravey train at a retail outlet.

I wanted to replace my house thermostat so I go on Homedepot's Canadian web site and find the one I want for $119 and change. I then go on their US web site and find the identical same model for $79. No way am I going to be ripped like this so in the end I decided to stick with my old thermostat and spend the money saved on beer and hockey! So I guess you could say the local retailer lost a sale but my money stayed in Canada LOL!

Of course, this business of ripping of the consumer is in no way restricted to the rv industry, and I thank the posters for broadening the scope of this thread. My add-on is Chapters calendar shelf..nice looking gift boxes..and there are two prices..Cdn and US...the one I just walked away from showed US 12.95-Cdn 16.95. When I asked about it...dollar being equal was told that that's because the product is ordered a year in advance. Yeah...and? Lost sale.
