I agree with 3G. While AT&T's GPRS/EDGE is slower, I have found it is more widely deployed than EVDO/1xRTT. This is why I picked Cingular years ago and have remained with AT&T. 3G is becoming more prevelant so you're not locked into the older GPRS/EDGE.

I have looked a couple of times at switching to EVDO but I was concerned about lack of coverage in some areas where I traveled, I couldn't find that they were even serviced by 1xRTT. Due to my job having some access which might be slow is necessary over no access.

My $.02, for rural service go with GPRS/EDGE/3G, for metro coverage EVDO is safe, but either way compare the coverage maps of the carriers you're looking at and where you might travel.

I have Sprint broadband card. It worked well across country and back this year. Only it will not roam... We pay 59.95 per month plus taxes and can put it on vacation when we do not travel at 5.95 per month.( up to 6 months a year)
We have a Sprint cell phone but I do not know if that was a requirement to get the rate.

Anybody have this vacation feature with Verizon and used it? This is the only reason I don't committ to an aircard. I want access on the road only and $60/month is too much to pay for occassional trips. But I might just buy into it if I could put it on vacation -- without a bunch of hassle...

We've used Verizon's service for 18 months, 12 months of which it has been our only internet access. We've been pleased with it, the speed is acceptable in most places we've been. Quite a few times it's been faster and more reliable than Wi-Fi that was available free at campgrounds we've stayed in. Only once in that time frame have we not used it because of speed, in Pinehurst NC. and the campground was so nice that we didn't miss it. We have our card set up on a router, a D-Link 450, works great, easy to secure, and even seems to improve conectability. I personally have several friends that have changed from satilite service to aircard service, because of speed and reliability. It's better than dial up and in 18 months I've only had a better connection a handful of times.

Lucy,
I don't think I can put the card on and off vacation every other month. You need ask how often you can do it. Seems like there may be a 2-3 month minimum or the 2-3 months maybe the time I have to have it activated. But it works for us as we generally travel 5-6 months steady each year.

If you aren't tied into Verizon for voice service this is a good reason to look at AT&T where you can tether your phone for $20/month and turn it on and off whenever you want to.

I subscribed to Verizon this year before a trip from FL to CA in Aug/Sept. We stopped in many states on the way (traveled for 2 months). Out of many, many stops, there were only 2 places where we didn't get DSL speeds. (we were in small towns where their cell towers weren't up to date). We still got slow dial-up type service, but opted to wait til the next town. The speed is faster than my DSL at home. I am so pleased with the service (Rev-A) that I'm no longer using my DSL at home. The plan I got was no activation fee, only $49.99 for the card and I installed it very easily myself. The rate is $59.99 per month which includes the cell phone number and activation of the new number assigned to the account. Unlimited access if you stay within their download rules. They bill it to my cell phone (Verizon) account. voila! I highly recommmend this service.

Just an update on AT&T 3G service using my Razr V3xx tethered to my laptop. My first speed test showed 197K download and 224K up. My location is not supposed to be 3G but apparently they have been performing upgrades w/o updating their web map.
