If you look up www.nationwidewholesaledirect.com I think you'll find they are the cheapest. They were when I bought mine, also if you can ship to a business address the shipping is a lot cheaper.

The 60 Gallon RDS Toolbox/fuel Aux Tank at Northern is $649.99 and Nationwide Wholesale Direct is $679.99. Then you need the $65.00 installation kit.

Boy, I guess you showed me. My second sentence said they were when I bought mine. I also compared the prices and found a 60 gal tank combo for 599.99 at nationwide, and from what I could tell you still have to buy the install kit northern at 70.00 vs 55.00 from natiowide. So please show me again which one's the cheapest. Replies like that is one reason I don't reply to some threads. Buy it from wherever you want, I won't try to help anybody else save any money on any thing.

I bought a 60 gal combo unit today at Northern for 599.99. The install kit was 69.00. Don't know if that was the cheapest or not but I was already there.

The slickest aux tanks I've ever seen are the ones that do double duty as the ubiquitous in-bed tool box:

Seems like a great way to carry alot of extra fuel without either advertising the fact, or loosing (much) usefull storage space in your bed.

Talk to somebody with actual knowledge regarding the legal/illegal question. You don't want to put a tank in your truck that is: 1) Illegal or 2) Dangerous.

Transfer Flow is expensive, but very high quality and legal.

It's not illegal to have gravity flow tanks - DOT regs are mainly for commercial units, not private light trucks. We've had several installed on flatbeds over the years - all done by Pierce in Billings - and if it was illegal, MDOT wouldn't allow it.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could get a definitive answer on the legality of gravity feed tank systems? Northern Tool uses this disclaimer, "It is the users responsibility to comply with local, state and federal requirements pertaining to safe transportation, loading and discharging of tank contents". Any lawyers out there want to try and decipher this confusion?

You will never get a difinitive answer from transfer flow people who think they know.

I chalenge anyone to come up with the statute, law, DOT regulation/requirement or whatever which clearly outlines that the gravity system on a pick up truck is not legit if hooked up and used properly.

For this exercise, what "ole Kooter down there on spot 76 says" will not suffice as an acceptable answer

From the FAQ at American tank

My buddy has a tank that just trickles fuel into the factory tank. Can you hook one up like that?

No. A Gravity feed system is never safe or DOT (Department of Transportation) approved. This system was widely used back in the "old days" but these days the fuel gauge on the new trucks are now taking intermittent readings instead of constant readings. This poses a problem for several reasons, how do you know when to turn off the fuel pumping from the storage tank into the factory tank. The one sure way to find out and what happens in most cases is that you have just pumped too much fuel into the factory tank and now it is all over the vehicle and the ground. If someone official was to see this you will also have a fine for cleaning up a hazardous spill which can cost you in the thousands of dollars.
