Well, we began our first Rainbird voyage when we left Seattle on Oct. 30. As advised on this forum we went down the coast, not Hwy 1, and are currently in Palm Springs area. We just love this new life.
Now its time to plan our return home. We visit our son in San Francisco the end of January to early Feb, then want to high tail it back to Seattle a fast as comfortably possible. I am concerned about bad weather in the passes. As I have never driven that part of I5, especailly in winter, I am concerned about the wise way to go home. How far up I5 is it safe to go if there is bad weather, i.e. snow and ice? We expect we can just wait out a storm in a nice, snowless campsite, and boost ourselves over the passes in one day. Is this sound thinking? Where would you suggest we stay that is just before hitting the passes. If you have RV resorts you like or think should be avoided it would be appreciated. We would prefer not to take 101 back again, however, if it is too risky to take the passes, the coastal route is an option.
All the best,
Seth

I know once you hit Oregon you will probably hit snow and ice. the pass near Grants pass can be ugly.

There are several campgrounds in the Redding area, I would suggest overnight there and travel in daylight over the passes (may wait there for road conditions to improve as well).
Note that CA law requires that you carry chains for both truck and trailer, when weather conditions are bad.

The only really bad weather area is southern OR and the CA border. If there is bad weather, stay in Redding for a day or two until the weather clears and the roads are cleared out.

The weather at the CA border crossing and Grant's Pass can be really unpredictable. Yeah, just wait it out in Redding, no need to go all the way out to 101.
We've stayed at two Premiere RV Resorts in Oregon, and they also have a location in Redding. Not 100% sure what it's like ther, but the other ones have really nice amenities. So if you do get stuck there, be sure to stay at the Premiere.

Thanks for the help. I am unaware of the requirements for chains in CA. Are they required for the coach as well as the TV? Must they be on board even if there is road surface is clear?

Oregon has chain laws also. Here is where you can find them. The TripCheck website is great for Oregon travellers. If you do decide to go up I-5, Redding is a good place to wait out any weather problems. Premiere and JGW are nice parks that we've stayed in. If the weather is good, you can easily get to Eugene from there. Good luck on your trip.
