We are in the planning stages for a Alaska trip from lower 48. We are considering returning on a different route thru BC. The Cassiar Hwy 37 connecting to Hwy 16 to Prince George a good choice? We have a 34' Class A pulling a Vue. We prefer no gravel roads.

There is a lot of discussion here about the Cassiar. You will be on some unpaved sections. And depending on the weather, good or not so good conditions.

But the trip down the Cassiar and over to Stewart/Hyder can't be beat.

There is the Forest Service Fish Creek bear viewing area. And the dive to Salmon Glacier. You drive along side of and above the glacier. Outstanding! I know of nowhere else to get view from above driving.

I second Luke Porter's comments above. The Cassiar is not fast road since it twists and does a lot of up and down (not steep) but for us last September the surface was fine and the scenery beautiful. The grizzly viewing at Hyder is terrific (when the salmon are running). They were still there mid-Sep this summer with another run about to happen. However, check before you drive it. Earlier this summer there was major road work due to landslides and washouts in the Spring.

We prefered the Cassier over the Alcan (done both). Be sure to stop in Hyder and see the bears!

Can't say about gravel, it doesn't bother us, and we did it several years ago. Will say neither road is an Interstate, but what is the hurry?

I found the Cassiar to be the most scenic part of the trip, and did not think the roads were that bad, but then I went in 2001. I can't say what they are like today, or will be next year. You will hit road construction somewhere on that trip, as it never ends. Wish I was going again soon.

Have a great trip.

You will get the best bear viewing and weather/road conditions if you use the Alcan going up in the spring/early summer and the Cassiar coming down in late summer/fall.

Go up the AH, and down the Cassiar. We came back down mid-Sept, no probkems. Left Watson Lake early am, stopping at Jade City and made Stewart by late afternoon, just in time to see the bears in Hyder. Road surface changes each year, depending of the winters.

I am glad that we did not miss the Cassiar. We also enjoyed a side trip to Terrace and Prince Rupert. See our trip log for more info.

We made the Alaska trip in '06 and again this year, both times going up the AH and returning via Cassiar. We will do the same next trip as well. Gravel roads are certain in the north country; just accept it and slow down a bit and you won't have any problems. In many cases the gravel sections are better than some of the paved sections. You can avoid lots of problems by really slowing down when fast moving traffic is approaching. It's usually YOUR speed that breaks glass, etc. The Cassiar is quite scenic. Since we couldn't see Alaska as it was 50 years or so ago, drop by Hyder and view a vision of the past. The bear viewing and glacier viewing, as said, is as good as it gets. Suspect later in the summer would be better for each, though.

No matter what route you travel unless by ferry to Alaska, you will be on gravel at some point. Wether it by a gravel road or construction. Just grin and bear it or don't go.
