We recently had our hybrid in our dealer's service department because one of the storage bins was having a difficult time locking. They fixed it, but told us that all of the locks on all TTs are opened with the same key! The only real lock that only our key could open was the one on the "deadbolt" on the actual door to the unit. They said that if we were at a campground, basically anyone with a TT key could unlock our storage bins and vice versa.
Is this true??
I'm not a paranoid person, but when I start dwelling on this, it is unsettling, to say the least. First, we have some valuable stuff in our storage bins (chocks, leveling blocks, sway control bar, heaters, portable grill, to name a few). Second, in our unit, if you can access the storage area, you could climb in, and snake your way inside the vehicle, as the storage bins are linked to storage access from the inside.
The service manager told us this, so it's hard to not believe him, but good grief! Is it true? He said that there is a lot of trust in the RV community, and I'm glad for that, but....I guess I like trusting locks more than the shady characters drinking into the wee hours of the night a few sites down from my TT!
So, is it true? We still have our TT in our driveway from a trip this weekend, so if it's true, I'm considering calling a locksmith.
Thanks!

Locks are only to keep honest people out. It is true. The compartment locks are all the same no matter what brand you have. The lock on the door is different.I have been camping over ten years and have no problem of things being taken. I work part time as security at a campground and the only thing we had happen is kids taken people beer coolers, but there is always one bad apple in a thousand in the camping community

Yes, most storage bins open with the same key. In fact I recently opened a friends Class C from Forest River storage with my key from Starcraft. Not too big of a deal in my mind. The entrance door (dead bolt) is more unique however.
So I guess keep your real valuables in either your TV or inside the HTT.

Yep, I heard the same thing when I bought my hybrid in Sept. Then the tech took the key that she opened my bins with & walked over & opened compartments on a 5'er & a TT from 2 different manufacturers with the same key.

Like mentioned previously, if someone wants into a storage compartment, it's an easy task to accomplish. We've never had an issue with theft at a campground nor to we worry about it.

YUP!Like everyone said.
The entry door is usually different but they are rotated with a limited amount possibilites just like cars.
I must admit I was a bit shocked that the big $$$$ class A's
have the same key too.

I changed out all of our compartment locks and now each has its own separate key. Still use the famous CH751 for the utility compartment and hydraulic jack switch.

Same # key as mine.
Locks just keep the honest folks out. Even though I have a key I won't mess with your stuff and I expect the same. Now if you ever get locked out just ask to borrow my key, I want mind.
Oh, if anyone ever tries to sneak into our TT, don't hurt the snake.

Yep their all the same. Their was a big-to-do here in the N.O. area when someone found out.. OH MY GOD all the FEMA trailers have the same keys.
I had to laugh it's been this way on RV's like.. forever.
The strange thing is our very first trailer was a Shasta and it came with
a residential dead bolt lock. It was the first and last one I've ever seen like this. When we got our Realite I just went out and bought a residential dead bolt lock and installed it myself. They are made for different door thickness and you can break the tap off to make it fit a thinner RV door. When we got the new Hornet I just left it as is with the duel locks. I figure insurance will take care of it when were not there and Mr. Colt and I will take care of the rest. (just kidding about the Colt)
