I am interested in a King Dome antenna for my Itasca Suncruiser MH. There are several models on their web site. I don't think I need the in-motion version or HDTV (I have HDTV at home, and I'm not sure what the fuss is all about). Can someone tell me what you get with the various King dome models? Need some practical advice from experienced users.
One more thing. I just read that a dome antenna dish is much smaller than the portable tripod-mounted type and thus may not provide as good a signal. Also the portable can be moved around to find a clear path though obstructions when a signal may not be available to the dome. So also need to have expert opinion on dome vs. portable.

There is a downloadable brochure on the web site that contains a table comparing the features of available models. Since you do not want either in-motion or HD compatibility the only choice you have to make is between fully automatic and "Autoscan". With the Autoscan you point the motorized dish manually using a hand-held controller.
The dome dishes are smaller than a standard open dish bu they are close to equal in their capability to bring in a signal. The only time you might see a difference is in fringe signal areas lke the far NE corner of the US and in parts of Canada. I have never had a problem with mine except that it has occasionally dropped the signal when rain or heavy dew causes water to bead up on the surface.
A lot of people that have domes, including myself, also have a portable for use when the dome is blocked by trees.

I am replacing my Kingdome in-motion with a fully automatic right now. The in-motion failed and it was older. I went with the fully automatic to get 2 lnb's so i can have TV's front and back. I only used the in-motion feature once just to see if it would really work. It did but I could not see using it unless you had a MH full of kids. Even then just buy a few DVD's.

Not that I don't think that HD has a sharper picture, but I'm not sure it is so much better that it is worth the extra cost. The HD aspect ratio is nice for movies. I mostly watch cable channels like History and others that use a lot of old film where HD is not available. The special channels where HD is showcased are not worth watching only for the pretty pictures. I will probably have HD in the new home (I plan to by a 50" to replace my current 37") we are building in Texas, but I don't see the need for it in a MH with the small screen sizes that are necessary.
