I just returned from Mexico City. I went down for the weekend and thought I would share a couple of pictures that I took and a little about where I stayed.

As everyone knows, D.F. is a huge metropolis of over 25 million people. I am always amazed at how well they can keep basic services alone going, water, lights, etc. Sure there is the good the bad and the ugly but that goes for any place this size.

Mexico City has a large and growing middle-class and upper-middle class population. I have good friends who live in an area around the World Trade Center and that is where I stayed over the weekend.

Colonia NĂ¡poles has a huge park in the center and is surrounded by shops, stores, restaurants and services. It is one of many neighborhoods where a snowbird could spend a couple of months living the life of luxury.

During my stay we ate out from a choice of Mexican, Italian, French, Lebanese, German, Chinese, and seafood. Supermarkets are within walking distance just as is the cleaners, laundremat, coffee bars and spas. We took the opportunity to visit a spa yesterday. Very cool place. They provide disposible undergarments, robes, slippers and much more. We started off with a jacuzzi, sauna, followed up by aromatherapy and a wonderful massage. 500 pesos. Afterwards we went by Starbucks for a coffee, I joked about keeping the cup and refilling it at the 7 Eleven.

Both Friday and Saturday we went walking in the parks nearby both in daylight and evening hours. There were lots of people out strolling in the parks and side streets and a huge sense of security.

Nearby is the Plaza de Toros (not into hurting animals) and the Cruz Azul stadium where they play every two weeks.

So there are many facets to a place like D.F., lots to do, lots to see and most of a change of pace.

My friends pay 800 dollars a month for a 1200 ft flat with 3 bedrooms, 2 baths and a small effeciency apartment for the maid. What a deal. Maybe dropping the trailer for a month or three and experiencing a much different world would make for a fun winter. Enjoy!

I like your perspective.

Chris, verdad?

I have read virtually everything you've posted in this forum because every time I have done a specific search, it seems you have had something to offer. I've lurked for awhile here, tried to inform myself via the archives.

I've found your input to be among the most instructive and to be more specific, culturally atuned.

I just wanted to respond to this, your most recent, by saying that I appreciate your passion and your overt willingness to help others like myself, NEWBIES, ROOKIES, lo que tu diga... to dispel the fear-based BS that would otherwise inhibit......

Input like yours, and others, has led me to pull my rig down here with confidence for the first time, este temporada. And, while I probably won't make to DF this year, the seed has been planted.

I appreciate your efforts.

Holy cow. Great post, Chris!

(a way off topic question: I gather Cruz Azul is the concrete company? Is the team generally popular in the country? How about the Chivas? I'd like to get a soccer jersey and hat, but I don't want one that will draw glares like the Yankees would in Boston).

And even farther off-topic - I recently bought all of the albums from Los de Abajo, a DF ska-fusion band. One album, "Cybertropic Chilango Power" turns the pejorative name on its ear. Great band, if you like Mexican rock and ska, with great musicianship that can readily handle all of the major folk genres.

Both teams are popular but more so in there own cities. Chivas is world reknowned and a very good team. Cruz Azul would receive stares here in the North but that's because we are Tigres y Rayados.
