I have a 2005 year model gasoline Onan 5500 Gold genset. The engine dies and the control panel reports Error Code 14. What is causing this and what is the fix?

I am still under warranty.

Check your manual to find out what code 14 is... It should have a index for fault codes. Don't forget to clear the code, the code will continue to come up and stop the generator if not cleared.

The Onan web site will have the manuals, codes, etc., available for their systems.

Overfrequency Fault -- Code #14
(Engine governor unable to maintain rated frequency)

Corrective Action: See an authorized Onan dealer.

I have read the manual, I can not see how you clear an error code?

How is it done?

On another forum someone posted to disconnect the battery to the gen.

On another forum someone posted:
Code 14, over frequency fault. Normally caused by engine speed increase after gen set is unloaded (ie microwave stopping or Air cond cycling off). This is most likely caused by an air leak or vaccum leak on the intake side of the engine. Things to check include the two nuts holding the carb air cleaner on, the bolts in the intake manifold, & the small vaccum hose leading to the choke pull off diaphram as well as the diaphram itself. Also make sure the crankcase breather is clean & working properly.

Thank You good advice.

Original poster did not include full model/spec/serial number. If engine is carbureted, might have a misadjusted idle screw or governor.

The information of a 5500 Onan 2005 model year just isn't enough to wager a good guess on.

I wish I could get to that information. The trailer is at the dealer (180 miles away) getting a leak fixed, for the fourth time.

Here is something that I noticed. The camper has a 26 gallon gas tank built in for the gen set located at the rear of the trailer, the gen set is at the front (36 foot trailer). After the genset has been running for a few hours the fuel level begins to drop. If you loosen the filler cap (gas cap) on the tank you can hear air rushing in.

So as the gas tanks level drops the fuel tank develops a vacuum. I'm supposing this means the fuel pump not only has to work to supply fuel but it now has to fight the vacuum building in the tank. Is the problem in the fuel tank filler cap? Aren't they supposed to be vented?

If I disconnect the battery to clear the error code then replace the gas tank cap with a vented cap, do you think the problem will go away?
