OK, we're runnin' against Vacuumed with his PSD thread .

If you have had a Dodge/Cummins:

- Have you had any problems/lemon lawed a Dodge/Cummins truck?
- Would you buy again?
- HOW MANY MILES?

I'll start:

- Replaced VP44 fuel injection pump at 64,000 miles ($2000 ). Lift pump put on under warranty @~50,000 miles (free - no deductible). No other issues at all.
- Yes, I'd buy again. It's #1 on my list.
- 65,000 miles

Fire away....

(I hope I put enough smilies in so everyone knows there is no mean spiritedness here...)

bought 12/18/04 used with 104K miles.
-NO mechanical issues since I have owned. No idea about prior ownership.
-Replaced some wear items. Track bar, upper and lower ball joints, filters, wiper blades, intercooler hoses, and tires.
-Added Edge EZ, turbo mod thingy, deep sump tranny pan, and 10 psi fuel pressure indicator light.
-Would definetly buy another Cummins Ram. The GM is a very close 2nd. The PSD is not nor will it ever be in consideration.
-Current mileage is 119K

I had lift pump failure at 53000 mi. (fixed under warranty)
I would definitely buy again ( would wait a few model years to let them get the bugs out of the new emissions stuff ( that goes for ford and Chevy to).
Now have 56000 Mi.

2004 2500 h.o. lack of power problem started at about 5000 miles, many trips to dealers and no fix,had to run a box on the truck to make it run even close to how it ran when I first got it,at 12000 miles I offed it,
would I buy again probably not,but I will probably never buy any other diesel again, can't justify it for 3000 miles a year and the headaches of owning a truck I can't trouble shoot myself

On my 4th right now but only about a thousand miles on it so far. No problems with the 1992, on the 1996 we blew a seal in a transmission fluid line twice with no transmission damage and also had a new fuel return (?) line. On the 2001 lost the lift pump twice, the injector pump once, added some after market stuff to try to improve the ****py steering. So far we really like the 2008. I know there are other good trucks that we'd probably be just as happy with but the dealer was also part of the equation of the purchases. Hard not to like a dealer that does for free stuff they could have charged for and didn't.

Have a 2007.5 3500 RAM with 6.7 CTD and 12.5k miles. A persistent oil leak at the front of the engine since new has just been repaired. At the same time, the radiator was replaced due to a pinhole leak (all under warranty). The only issue now is a persistent lighting of the CEL (check engine light) due to a turbo glitch. This is being worked on but the truck is perfectly drivable and a good performer. I'm happy with it and will be ecstatic when Dodge/Cummins gets these emissions problems cleared up .

I have never owned a Dodge/Cummins. Only have driven a couple for a few hundred miles.

I did however, have a Big Cam III NTC-350 that had over 1,000,000 miles on it. Only work was rod, and main bearings early on. Had to have it overhauled after 1,000,000, because of a blown headgasket. It still wasn't using any oil at that point. I kept one of the pistons out of it. It looks brand new.

BTW, you diesel pick-up truck boys think you have something new with your programmer boxes, and such. Yawn

I was hotrodding 14L diesels when the 6.2L Chevy/GMC was the only thing in town. That old NTC-350 would really wake up with about $10.00 worth of injector pump parts. I installed a bigger govenor spring, and shims to bring the RPMs up to 2200. Added a #17 button to the pump, and opened up the aneroid valve bypass to give it fuel before the turbo spooled up. Now that baby would run. But that is leaving the injectors, and turbo stock. Reflowed injectors, and a bigger turbo, you were looking at 600HP/2200ft/lb at the crankshaft.

After I "fixed" it, that NTC-350 Cummins with 9sp Roadranger could push a 550HP C-15 Caterpillar up any hill that I wanted it to.

EDIT:

After I had the ol '91 Freightliner FLD overhauled I drove it approx another 100,000mi. Somebody else owns it now. I still see it running around my hometown every so often. It is still pulling a flatbed.

I'll bet that old NTC-350 engine block has close to 1,500,000 miles on it by now.

2001 Ram 2500 extend a cab,
Tranny, ball joints, and rear axle bearings. Would I buy another?? depends on my needs and what they have to offer at the time. I remember the ride was kind of bumpy and the truck would dent if you looked at it wrong.

no, OEM injection pump 125k+ on the original VP44. Lift pump replaced with a FASS at ~60k, when the OEM lift pump dipped to less than 5psi at wot and 9 cruising.

yes, although the 6.7 has some unknowns yet.

Have had 11 Dodge/CTD's since 1989 (8 2500's and 3 3500's). Ran them all the death 4 over 230,000; 6 over 300,000; and one I just sold had 425,000 miles on it. Replaced a couple of belts, hoses, rear axle seals & bearings (in all the 2500's), lower ball joints (in the 3500's); lift pumps in the 3500's. Still have the engines from four of them running as gensets producing 85kw. Ya can't beat or completely destroy a Cummins unless it's intentional. Won't have another brand.
