If we are to survive as a first world nation, we would be grasping the changes happily and with much vigor. Try thinking intelligently. The days of "cradle to grave" bubbles are long gone. Taxes, regulations, fraud, lawsuits, give aways, excessive wages/benefits for little work accomplished, etc, has done it's job well and very effectively. All that's left is the final spike to finish it off.
When I was a kid in the 1940's and into the 1950's there were only American made products on the shelves. The 6 transistor radio was developed in the USA and yet we couldn't mass produce it at a cost the consumer could begin to afford. It began the loss of our electronic industry. Then, We, the American consumer, began sending our money offshore in huge bundles to a places that had basically no economy. Such is the results of ever increasing demands for lower commodity prices. You won, so are you we happy now? Smart thinking and buying, right? Fast forward to our decade and you have hardly any American made products even available at any cost and we are continuing to buy all the foreign made at an ever increasing pace. Just WHO do you think is buying all these foreign made products? If you didn't buy them, they wouldn't be on the shelves!!! Retailers wouldn't stock them. Inventory is very expensive. But we just keep buying them year after year!!! Bye Bye American jobs!! Not needed anymore! Now those "have nothing" countries are showing you a thing or two and with your money you have provided them with. Go figure! I can assure you it's not the rich CEO's or those big rich stock holders buying these cheaper offshore items. They can afford anything they want. However, even though being few and far between, they are an easy target for the masses and/or wannabe's to rail against. Think about it! A few thousand of these rich dudes as compared to 150,000,000+ other workers. That's 150 million plus! It's just as silly as it sounds. BTW, a rich person hires people but a poor person employ's NO one. Rich people are generally the givers in society and the rest are the takers. We should be happy for the rich people in our country. They may have gotten to the point you may want to be at! Only difference is that they did something about it rather than rattle their lips. So obvious how jealousies show so brightly. You can pick them out in about any crowd.
Maybe American companies/corporations are not as bad as some depict. We, the American poople, have controlled their destiny too!!!
If you don't like your job or feel you are under paid. Do something constructive about it. Maybe, even go open your own business and get RICH like all these other business owners are. Wait! A very small percentage of businesses are even around in 2-5 years. But don't worry, you can beat the odds! What's stopping you? Maybe you like going your to work in the morning, putting in your 8 hours, then go home and forget about your job until that dreaded next morning when you have to go back to that darn work. Will it never end? Just think! You can own your own business and have it occupy your mind, thinking, motions, nearly 24 hours a day so you don't have the misery of the work start and stop drudgery. You will get to wake up in the middle of the night and shake because you can't meet your payroll the next day. Employees don't wait nor does the government!!! Maybe it's because your backbone customers have just left for cheaper pastures.
Last time I looked. It's the choices you make in life that determine your destiny.

I understand your attitude, but we can't have the tail wagging the dog.
I would like to work for a corporation where there is an incentive bonus to the maintenance through to the CEO. It is all about a "family" concept. Everyone will be at risk for their performance and LACK of their performance. Of course the program must be equitable and transparent to all party's and perhaps instead of a outside Union rep. would be replaced with a inside rep with minimal dues allocated to absolutely no governmental representatives.
By the way , my name is also, George and no affiliation to that other George. Have a Merry CHRISTmas and do your due diligence prior to your 2008 investments.
travelnutz!!
Very well stated. I totally agree with you.
I recently purchased a 2007 Ford Crown Victoria. Great value for the price. Of course , all the parts where not manufactured in the US but still Ford employs a lot of folks in Saint Thomas, Ontario, Canada. (I don't consider Canada, an off shore enterprise).
Skid Row Joe wrote: No one will ever tell me that the working-class cannot become multi-millionaires in America during their lifetimes, no matter what they do for a living, or what their education level is........I happen to know better.
I'm not sure the "working class" can attain "multi", but do feel one can pocket enough dough to attain some form of financial freedom at a given age. I am with you Skid, in that I too know better and am one who operates under the principle "if it's going to be, it's up to thee".
It's interesting that some of the biggest earners I've met and know for years are always unsure of their financial futures. A guy I grew up with, just quit (said he was stressed-out) flying @ 56 yr. old, after 22 yrs. with a major airline. He was a captain, 737, pulling down $180K a year. It's hard to believe that he virtually has no savings, and carries over $10K in credit card debt. His 401K has $650K in it, and he has probably $600K in equity in his home, and a rental condo he owns in Mission Viejo, CA. --Neither property is paid for. I told him years ago, that there were very few people in the country making the kind of jack he was making, and that he had to be a fool to ever quit. I still think that.
I have a sweet tender nature, however I enjoy sharing my thoughts and opinions.
