Looking at buying a used 2005 YFZ450 all stock. Are they reliable? Any known issues? Should I hold out for Honda? I ride desert, mountains and a few trips a year to Glamis. Thanks for any input.

I have a 2006. It was perfect until my son filled the engine with silt. Piston, new rings, 2 new valves later it's running great again. By the way, it's a great quad. It really rips.

Yamaha has great machines that are every bit as good as a Honda.

I have an 04 & 05. both have been bullet proof with the proper maintenance. The 05 is faster and stronger than the 04 even tho they are similiarly equipped. Bought the 05 new and stole the 04 in like new condition with tons of bling for 4000.

I have a CRF450, I would say the Yamaha has the better motor. We run the******out of them at the sand dunes and those Yamaha's just keep on going. I also trail ride mine and don't like the four speed transmission on the older Yamaha's. My next bike will be an 08 YFZ450.

I bought one new in 2005 and have never regretted it. They are fast and reliable and although they don't need modification they respond to it well. I added a slip on exhaust and the exhaust cam from the YZ450, that really woke it up (also made it a little tougher to start). As long as you maintain the air filter and change the oil this 4 stroke will make you very happy. I can honestly say the strength of the motor convinced me to sell my 03 CRF450 (after I rebuilt the motor for the 3rd time) and buy a 2007 YZ450. I'm happy with that decision as well and the front forks are magic on the Yamaha (for fellow 2 wheelers out there, I love the new bike).

Only recommendation on the YFZ is that you undo all the preload on the front and play with the rebound, the front shocks were built for hard pack racing, not the dunes.

Don't take life too seriously, it's not permanent.
