Yes a member of the Escapee's club reported being pulled over and told to follow the officer to a weight station. There he was told to un-hitch his dual rear wheel truck, and return once he had a truck that would carry his 25,000 GCVW safely. This person was a full timer, and wrote in to say they had been checked at a weigh station. The weigh station said that his truck was only rated by the factory to carry and tow 20,000 pounds. I suspect that the rear axle of his truck was over it's factory weight rating, but it might be they went by the manufactures weight ratings.
Fred.
Sounds like another rumor to me as well.

I think it's fiction. I just cutNpasted it to escapees.com and asked if anyone knows about this.
I believe that I'm well within limits and could even move up to a slightly larger FW without problems. I would certainly check out the weight before making a move up. The only time I,ve ever heard of anyone being checked for weight was in Canada.
Here in North Carolina, we have to buy tags for our TV based on the combined weight of the TV and trailer, but you could probably get by for a long time if you exceeded your GCWR on your tag without getting caught unless you were stopped for another traffic violation and then you had better be willing to pay the piper.
Quote: RVsafety.org has been weighing RVs at shows and rallys for many years. A couple of years ago I attended one of their lectures (at Life on Wheels). Their records show that about 60-75% of all Rvs (all types) are overweight!
You are correct in your concerns. Stay under the manufactureres limits 0 both tv and RV for your own sake. Check out their website for great advice and hints.
I find the statement above very interesting, makes ya wonder about all brand X tires are junk statements on the forum.
Am I overweight? Not the last time I looked in the mirror. LOL I couldn't resist.
Happy RVing.

Let's see, 60-75% of us are overweight. I am always curious when I see "statistics" listed this weigh (pun intended). Can't decide whether or not the 15% is or isn't over weight that comprises the range listed? Can't do the math? Just guessing? You are either over OEM's weight ratings or not.
If those are actually accurate, and when you have a range like this you really can't be sure of the accuracy, where is all the carnage? I would expect to see all manner of RV's on the side of the roads just a fallin' apart. Pieces an parts just flyn’ off of ‘em, engines smoking, brakes aglowin…who eee what a sight to see.
It is amazing to me what folks worry about and don’t worry about. This has been brought up before, but have you ever looked at the OEM weight ratings for your “other” vehicles? The non-RV type. Think you have ever exceeded that rating? Did that vehicle self destruct in a puff of smoke? Oh, I forgot, you have never weighed that vehicle so you don’t know its weight either. Maybe RVsafety.org should be weighing other types of vehicles than RV’s; there are lots more of them on the roads and on the side of the roads, for that matter. Many thousands more involved in accidents each year, also.
My point, if there is one, is most people haven’t a clue about the weight of their vehicles, vehicle dynamics at any weight and the most routine of maintenance issues involving the vehicles they operate. Yet, they get by “most of the time”. Knowledge in the areas mentioned is more important than not knowingly or unknowingly exceeding a non-law OEM weight rating.

the OP questions just about mirrows a current weight/licensing thread in the toy hauler forum only the TH OP is strictly a CA question. CA has a RV towing booklet and web for weight regs in black and white so its known what weights CA can use to determine legal weights. The OP question assumes most are overweight from their vehicle ratings AND has anyone been stopped and weighed and ticketed. Tickets can only be given for being over what your state determines is a legal weight limit. Many are cluless on what their own state says is a legal weight. A few claim there are no weight regs and make up their own.
I'm over my truck manufactors GVWR but I carry a uprate GVWR from my state. I'm under GAWR and my tires capacities for the rest of what my state says are legal weights.
I've never been ticketed for being over weight on the several different RV's I've carried or towed since the early '60s. But I have been stopped and weighed using the same truck when pulling commercial or even my own equipment AND I have paid a couple overweight tickets and non compliance on improper use of load restraints.
As in the TH question, I certainly wouldn't draw any conclusion on what just 20-30 posters on this web have to report. Check your own state DPS/DOT for their input if you can be stopped and weighed while pulling your RV. In my state it ain't likely according to a state troop captain in my area.

You will not get weighed out. Motor Carrier officers are there for commercial vehicles. In MIchigan I believe it is 24,000 lbs gvwr. Its been a few years since I enforced it. Not advocating being overweight though. You are not going to get a ticket for it. Anyone know anyone that did...not just "heard" that someone did, but actually know anyone?
