Todalake, I found the thread, started by FiverBob, sadly........no pictures. I can't find it on Carriage's site either. It's part of the Carri-Lite line up. This is all I can find http://www.carriageinc.com/carriage_carri-lite_fifth_wheel.php I will keep searching though, I am quite interested in checking this out.

Why would that be? Surely there's no regulation on that. Just curious.

Thanks.

Yes there is a regulation on it. After that size you basically go into a park model.

WitchKing,

I agree with Capt you need to take a look at the Excel RV. This is not just because I own one because I have had many others. in fact I had a 98 King of the Road, a 2003 Cedar Creek Custom, 2006 Doubletree Elite just to name a few and now I have an Excel (all new). I have looked at them for years and finally decided to make the move to Excel. One thing I really like about them is their height. When the suspension is set on its lowest setting they are under 12' tall now this is without the 2nd AC. The way their roof is styled it drops down where the main AC is setting. The Limited (that we have) has a fiberglass roof that they have been doing this style for years. We have a 35 but measures 36'8" overall with 3 slides. We are in OR interior that we had over 100* days and with one 15,000 BTU AC it kept our rig in the 75 to 77* range all day long and this is with the sun hitting on the east and west on the sides of the trailer. It is wired for the 2nd AC but actually the president of Excel suggested that we try it with just one and if needed we could add another one. He was right as of right now we have now need for another (maybe if we went to Texas or AZ in the summer we would add it). We have full hydraulic levelers as a factory option and you can actually lift the 5er completely off the ground with these jacks. Excel uses a full box frame unlike many manufacturers use either "C" or "I" frames. Another thing is they will make custom changes for you. We had some done to our's when we ordered it.

In case you can tell I think very highly of the Excel line. Just to show how much they care I made a comment on the Excel forum about my 32" LCD TV about how unhappy I was with it. I got a PM from the president of the company telling me he thought I had a bad TV and he had already been in contact with his supplier about it. Within 4 hours after my comments on the TV I had a call from the supplier asking me where they wanted me to send my new TV to. The new TV came in and the old one was a bad one and got it replaced and all is good with the world.

Bottom line it really makes no difference to me what you buy but just wanted to tell you some of my experiences with the Excel RV

This is IMO

By federal regulation, a towable over 400 Sq ft is considered manufactured housing and must meet federal energy conservation standards.

Hey Butch,
No,no, I appreciate it. You've had first hand experiences and I have not, so I liked all that info. I am going to check out the Excel and check it all out. I figure I'll be doing that for a little while and I appreciate everyones input on everything. This has been a great learning thread for me. I'm really getting into it now but I have alot to learn yet. As I stated earlier, I have my clipboard out and am writing notes on things that I have to check on...eg..disk brakes for sure!

Check out RV.org and maybe invest in their data base of RV evaluations. Not all RVs are alike. Some are for just a vacation now and then others are rated for full time living. Also, with some RVs you will void your warrantee if you use it for more than it is designed for.

Also, don't let floor plans and looks blind you to bad construction. This blog and RV.org can give you a wealth of information. Do your homework and figure things out for yourself. Find out the facts and trust your own good judgement. And as always, if the price is too good to beleive it probably is.

I know what you mean about law enforcement. I did 27 years with the Florida Marine Patrol. Still working and will full time in about three years. Good luck and enjoy!

Carriage is another nice 5er. Start at around $80,000 to $150,000 and up.
Quality is very good.

Also check out open road models at pilgrimintl.com My 40'er pulls better than I hoped and is also easier to park than I was afraid of and the floorplan is awesum.

I second the Open Road, I have a 05 396 RDDS, a 40 fter with 4 slides and it is great, 40 foot seems long to some people but I drove a semi for 10 years so after that the 40 footer was nothing. Just watch your swing of the tail end, other than that your good togo.

We stay for extended periods in our 36' Jayco Designer, but more than the length, the four slides and king size bed make it "roomy".
