I would not do it. Trailers and ice/snow do not go together. Also, these trailers are cold and drafty. I would not want to be in one in CO in the winter. This time of year we head south, not north.

Don't be fooled by my home location. I have been to CO & done the winter driving on I70 many times. We have never been trapped on the highway but have been in near white out conditions & by luck, traveling back to Boulder, got off 70 1/2hr before the highway was closed. None of this was done dragging a trailer.
Colorado DOT is very good at getting roads clear. Weather forcasting is also very good. However, I would also have some serious second thoughts about taking a 5er into the high country mid winter. If timing for travel days is very flexible then fine but I think my biggest concern would be keeping the 5er warm.
My cold weather overnighting experience is limited to a couple nights in the high teens at Bryce Canyon. The furnace knows how to suck up propane in a big hurry.

Regardless of the advice against it, still sounds like you've made up your mind to try this trip with your 5'er. Good luck.

I've pulled our 5er in Colorado in the winter a number of times, including staying at Riger Run in the snow. If you really want to do it, I suggest skip the chains and only travel when the roads are in good condition. Be patient and be prepared to adjust your travel plans as required. If that's not an option, then I'd leave the 5er at home.

Well I'll be pulling my 5er to Co from CA in mid Jan but it will be a one time trip as that will be it's new home. I grew up in Co and LOVE the snow and driving in the snow BUT I'm not looking forward to this trip with a 9000+ pound trailer. I'll get pictures and post after it's all over.
Also the advice on the (towing a 5er in the snow) thread is GREAT! you should read all 7 pages.

Forecast for the 21st. is snow in northern New Mexico which would include Abq. Santa Fe, Raton and Taos, actually the forecast includes southwestern New Mexico but only light snow and rain. We were heading for Mesa Az. the 21st. but due to the forecast we are leaving the 20th. You might think about Ruidoso, NM. I-10 to El Paso then up to Alamogordo, NM to Ruidoso these roads are nearly always clear and there are no bad pulls on them. Nice Ski area and casino, Inn of The Mountain Gods and Ski Apache at Ruidoso also ski area at Cloudcroff. Both easy access from Alamogordo.

FYI - current forecast for Breckenridge is snow on Friday (60% chance) and Saturday (20% chance)- max temp 25F. In my experience a forecast for up there which says 20% or 60% chance of snow normally means 100% chance!! Same forcast for the Front Range. I am supposed to pick my 5er up from the dealer in Colorado Springs on Friday - that's 110 miles from home. I am seriously thinking about not going.

I have made the trip with my DW when they closed down the Raton pass and we had to wait for it to open and when it did only one lane was open and they only let a few vehicles thru in intervals and when it go dark they closed it. With that being said I agree with the other posters about leaving the fiver home and staying in a hotel. Just my 2 cents worth.
