Our six year old, 3 lb. Yorkie went blind overnight. We were away for a week and he was left with a sitter. When we returned he had lost all sight in both eyes. Since we live in Tyler,Texas our vet referred us to the Animal Opthalmology Center in Dallas the next day. Their diagnosis was that he had inflammation of the optic nerve in both eyes. He's on Prednisone (to reduce the inflammation) and antibiotics. The prognosis is that he has a 50% chance of regaining some sight in the right eye, but no real chance of any return of vision in the left eye.

We'll see the docs in Dallas again this Friday the 21st. We're hoping for the best. Needless to say, the little guy is rather traumatized at this time. Keep the little feller in your thoughts.

That is so sad for you. I will pray that Buster gets his sight back in the right eye. Otherwise, many dogs do very well and there are others on the forum that have experience and can give you tips

I know it's hard, but you and Buster will adjust if need be. My 15 year old cat went blind and lived till he was 19. Went in and out of the cat door on his own and did just fine. Only real issues were if we moved the furniture or left a box someplace unusual. Challenged Mork just a bit. My thoughs are with you and Buster!

Dogs have smell-a-vision, they can go for years without sight or hearing. It just takes you more time to get them around especially stairs. Our 16 year old poodle is doing great without hearing and almost no sight. Hope infection clears up fast.

As many have said, dogs and cats usually do great after losing all their sight. It is a little more of an adjustment when the loss happens all of a sudden. Other senses compensate and their life style accomodates. Hope all goes well.

I know this must be a shock for you... I am sorry to hear about Buster's sudden onset. I hope some of his sight can be restored. If not, then I am hopeful he will adjust and get along using his other senses. I have had deaf dogs and one with very limited sight. It always amazes me what they are capable of doing even though differently abled.

So sorry to hear bout your dog - that's so scary. It happened to my dog too - it seems he went blind overnight. In retrospect I think he may have been slowly going blind but I didn't notice till he went completely blind so it seems to me it was overnight. My dog was diagnosed with SARD - no hope of ever regaining his site.
It's good news that your Buster has some hope of regaining some sight - lots of dogs can get along fine with limited sight.
Good luck to you and to Buster

I hope things go well for Buster. My dog is a 17-1/2 year old miniature pinscher that is completely blind and deaf, and has been for several years. She does fine, she walks around the house, bumps into things, but keeps on going. She reminds me of the energizer bunny.
