The Walmart just up the street from us had three parking lot robberies in one month. It is not located in a five star neighborhood but you have to be careful in larger towns.

I have no problem with overnighting in WM but to put out all the slides and awning and sat dish is a little too much.

There are a couple of email lists on Yahoo devoted to overnight parking at Wal-Mart. They maintain lists of Wal-Marts that allow or don't allow overnighting that are updated regularly. They include much useful information such as the addresses and GPS coordinates of the stores.

They also have a set of suggested guidelines that include things such as no slides (unless they're necessary to access vital areas of the RV, no awnings, no BBQ's, no chairs and more. Here's the link to join one of them. The others can be found by searching Yahoo.

A quick google search of 'campground murders' brought up 119 hits. Searching for 'WalMart murders' brought up 54 hits. It is therefore safer to stay at WalMart then in a campground. Do you folks that stay in campgrounds not care about you or your families safety?

From what I have seen, I'd venture to say that figure of 119
is most likely derived from the 'resident' people that 'live'
at CG's.

I have left and asked for my money back from 'several' CG's in
my travels that had 'questionable' resident campers.

I now have 2 questions when reserving a spot in a CG.
Do you have pull thru sites? AND Do you have resident campers?

Good topic. We're heading out to WalMart for a couple days this weekend. Taking the quads and a couple dirt bikes, they're not much fun on WalMarts blacktop but there is some open land out back of WM where we can get the speed up. Our only worry is I hope we dont get bothered much by Christmas shoppers wanting to sit around the campfire with us and eat all our smores.

Sounds like you are planning to ''camp'' at Walmart. That is a definite no-no. Walmart stopovers should be reserved for overnight rests without un-hooking or putting out slides, etc.

Thank you all for your honest reply's. I did not want this to be a social statement about crime in America but a response from experienced campers as to whether it was as convenient a way to make my way down thru the states as easily as possible as it seemed. From a traveling point of view I would like to pick the WM's that would sell me diesel in the morning.
I don't live in a fort and can afford the 20 or 30 buck it would take to camp, but to travel as far as you can in one day and rest up late at night seems inviting. I do not wish to put my wife & I in harms way to save a few bucks as one person suggests, but I think drawing on other peoples experiences is all what this site is about. So thank you to you all that have expressed that.

I guess you have not seen the documentry about WalMart. It has a segment about the lack of security in there parking lots. It has a list of WalMart parking lots all over the U.S. that have had robberies, murders, shootings, and many other types of crimes. Do you want to take a chance? It's like Russian roulett, a gamble. You could loose. By the way, why do you think that some cities have ordinances against overnite parking? They are not trying to be mean, it's for your own safety.

We stay at WM several times a year, one near Georgetown, Co and also Casper, Wy. Never a problem and most RV ers are sleeping by early eve and quiet. Truck stops are handy as well, but noisy w/trucks and often times, vagrants. Some ordinances don't allow overnight stays as it reduces revenue income for RV parks and Motels etc as one consideration, but also it keeps some of the undesireables away. They are not worried about our safety.

Gotcha. I enjoy staying at WALMART. The one that is my favorite is in East L.A. There I leave the door open all nite. I enjoy kicken it with the homies. Sometimes I put the BBQ out incase some of the locals come by to mess with me. I just fire it up and cook up some steaks, then every thing is cool for a couple of hours. Ya"ll know what I'm saying.
