Heya,
I'm enjoying breaking in my brand new Yamaha 2400 inverter.
I've noticed that along with the putter of the engine, there is a slight higher pitch 'whirrrr' sound under the sound of the motor. Eventhough it is very minimal, it happens to be at an unplesant frequency. Is the whirr going to get more subtle over use? Is anyone else sensitive to this sound?
Cheers,
SKSQ

To illustrate the sound I found a video on youtube

If you listen, it sounds like a tea kettle is whistling at the same time the motor is running.

May be air flowing over something, may be something else, I've listened to Yahama's at everything from no-load to half load and never heard a sound other than the very soft purr of the engine, They were so loud (not) that we did not have to raise our voice till the big one hit full load... I was like 1 foot from the generator at the time, Could have easily rested a foot atop it had it been mine and not the store's. And at that we did not have to raise our voices much.

I think you're going to have to get used to it. Sounds exactly like my 2k.

The slight whine you hear is the blower attached to the engine shaft that moves cooling air through the enclosed housing.
Some people hear it, some don't. It is at a relatively high pitch. As we age, we lose our ability to hear the higher frequencies. Also, I'm sure manufacturing tolerance variations make some units louder than others.

I’m sympathetic with you on the whirring noise. That sort of noise drives me crazy…and even more so because usually others claim they can’t hear it. I was so thankful when LCD TV’s and monitors became readily (and cheaply) available; the hum from a CRT just about drives me crazy. All tube TV’s and CRT computer monitors make a hum that is downright annoying and makes it hard for me to concentrate. Some of my friends laugh at me because I don’t know a lot of the TV pop culture stuff as I simply could never watch TV for very long…I certainly didn’t run my life around it like most others seem to do….that could be a good thing. (I get the same hum from older fluorescent light fixtures, but the electronic ballast ones like in an RV are fine.)

One advantage to having been in the Artillery-I can't hear high-pitched sounds like that!! Would a simple shield like a piece of plywood or polystyrene insulation board between the generator and the MH help?

I hear it, but it's not an issue because my gen is outside well away from the coach when in use. I'm not standing next to it, and it's not idling.
I'm like Max in that I was so thankful when Laserdisk and DVD came along to replace the VCR. In an otherwise quiet movie passage, a phone would ring. I could hear, along with the ringing, a low tone at the same time - like a low humming sound. It happened on two separate VCRs.
