I say "YES" and a lot will say no so you will have to make you own mind up as to how safe you want to be.

With a DP, you can probably do O K without an aux. brake. BUT, do you feel safe?
Your call.

You probably would be fine, however, what do the laws in the areas you plan on towing say about requirements for Aux brakes?

I would not recommend towing any vehicle behind a MH without a break system in the tow vehicle. The increase in stopping distance in an emergency can mean the difference in driving away or seeing your vehicles towed off damaged.

We have been towing for over three years without an auxillary brake system (Pontiac Vibe - 2,900 lbs/Chevy Malibu - 3,500 lbs) and haven't had any problems. We've had to make a couple of emergency stops and the rig brakes have done a good job stopping both the motorhome and toad. In the interest of full disclosure, our motorhome has a CCC of almost 5,000 lbs so I feel we have a little extra margin even if towed weight cannot be compared to weight on the actual motorhome.
I have looked at several of the braking systems and the only one I would consider at this point is the system from M & G Engineering.
You are probably going to get the usual posts about having an auxillary brake system being the law, but keep in mind very few states currently have laws specific to motorhomes towing a vehicle four-down. ON EDIT: I am pretty sure Canada has rules about toad brakes.

I did OK towing a 3100 pound Subaru for 50,000 miles. I had one panic stop this year the scared me *a lot*! I pushed the MH brake peddle as far as it would go. I managed to get stopped with only about 10 feet to spare. We bought a 4500 pound car, so I'm getting a brake because I will feel better when having to stop with the extra weight.
My wife and I had a great time in Quebec City this summer. We hope to spend more time there soon.

It only takes once, to find out if you should have had aux brakes. And as you noticed, the ones that don't have, all say they have not have any problems. It's all in the toss of the dime. Do you feel lucky or is lady luck giving you thumbs down. It's your choice. JM2Cents Bill

I tow a 4,500 lb Chrysler Sebring convertible and use a Roadmaster Brakemaster toad brake even though my DP has ABS air brakes and the 400hp Cummins has a two speed Jake Brake. Great peace of mind if nothing else. That said, the $1,225.00 cost to install on top of the previously spent $2,400.00 for Roadmaster Sterling tow bar, Universal wiring kit and install, Roadmaster baseplate and install, Roadmaster Guardian Rock Shield and install, four keyed alike locks and Roadmaster vinyl tow bar cover has left me breathless...(not to mention the Remco Lube Pump and install $1,100.00 which I did not elect to spring for since I tow with the toad engine idling. But SMALL CHANGE since our 40' BIG RIG costs us in total about $15,000.00 a year to ENJOY...and we do. Somewhat tongue in cheek but all of the above was a mild shock to these two "newbies".
