Any particularly nice places to pull over for the night along this route ?

It is not dry camping but Brantley lake SP a little N of Carslbad has power & water & is 3 miles off 285 therefore no noise. Typical SP, large well spaced sites. Did a 3 nighter there early last month. Next to nobody else in the park.

I don't recall there being anything between Carlsbad and Pecos, but there is probably a picnic pull off spot along there, and those are usually safe to overnight in.

You're right. But if he wants a nice place to stay in the Carlsbad area, Brantley Lake SP is it. And, since it's only 87 miles from Carlsbad to Pecos, he probably doesn't need another overnight spot.
I appreciate the reinforcement about Brantley SP - I have seen it recommended before - but The Texan is right...I'm focused on the road South from Carlsbad. My Plan A (when did I last stick with a Plan A ?? ) is to ON (Over Night) at Ft. Bliss in El Paso, ON at Guadalupe Natl Pk Pine Springs Parking Lot, visit Carlsbad Caverns, then ON somewhere along 285 before headin on down to Davis Mtn St Pk. When I'm paying little to nothing for campsites, I don't go far each day. EasyDoesIt...
