We are taking a trip to the Great Lakes area and while in Minnesota we want to vist Voyageurs NP. Can anyone recommend a CG near the park? We will be there in Aug, so I am thinking it may be warm there and will need electricity. We will be in a 35' 5ver.
I hope you are aware Voyagers is pretty much water accessible only. The nearest cg would be at Crane Lake or near International Falls. There are only a very limited number of roads into the edge of the NP and they are up near International Falls.
August will be hot, with lots of flies, gnats, mosquitos and possibly woodticks.
If you are touring around Lake Superior, the Voyager is several hours west over country roads.
If you want to fish, canoe or boat in Voyagers, it is absolutely beautiful, but it is not a drive to, hike and tour park. You can rent houseboats to tour around the park. Not sure what the cost would be per week.
Before you firm up your plans, contact the park for their amenities.
As you probably know, Voyageurs NP can be reached only by water (i.e. by boat, canoe, kayak). The closest town is International Falls, MN; you might check a CG directory (Trailer Life or similar) for camping in that area. The website for the park (www.nps.gov/voya) mentions state forest CGs near the area, but my impression of state forests is that they rarely include hookups. Good luck!
Look into the Sunset Resort on Ash River. From their campground you can reach Lake Kabetogama (sp?), Namakan etc by boat. We have pulled a boat there with our motor home and really like the place. But, as others have said, you need a boat. Sunset has rentals, groceries, etc.
The weather up there can be hot (80 - 90's) with 65 to 80% humidity, which I know is probably cool for anyone in LA, but for a northern Minnesotan is HOT. The next day the weather can be in the 50's and rain or someplace inbetween. Pack all kinds of clothes, be prepared for all types of weather, bring LOTS AND LOTS of mosquito spray.
We stayed in a Minnesota State Forest Campground (Woodenfrog Campground) a few miles from one of the Voyageurs National Park Visitor’s Centers on 9-27-07. There were only three campers in the 61 site campground. The campground was beautiful. The sites were wooded and well separated from each other. There were no hookups and of course the temperature was plenty cool at the end of September. With all the shade, it might be bearable in August. The below picture, with a double rainbow, was taken on the walk back to the registration booth from our campsite. There were campsites on both sides of this gravel road. The campground was elevated on a little bluff where you could look across the water and see Voyageurs National Park.
