it doesn't seem much like a tail gate if you cant put any weight on it. What other benefit besides not having to open the tail gate to hook up? It only takes me 1 min to open the gate, I wanted one of these but not if it will not even hold a little weight.

If you are in a really tight situation, bad rise or dip at your sight, or at 90+ degrees for a hitch up. That tailgate will pay for itself in one use. Otherwise you will have to REMOVE, now lower your gate. And that takes more than a minute to remove.

I suspect the gate would hold some weight but I don't feel any need to test it and have never needed to have the gate on while loading something. I just use it to keep things in the bed of the truck while towing. While it only takes a second to raise/lower the OEM gate, if you ever have a senior moment, the crunch will wake you up quick.

soyboy,
The Stromberg-Carlson company is known for making telephone equipment especially central office equipment. They invented the X-Y Switching system.

The inexpensive tubular one sold at Northern Tool does NOT come with anything. You need to adapt your cables to it. That is very easy though. For about $155 it is good deal I think.

Agree with Frank. I have one also - as in his photo.
Also from Northern Tool.

Did lots of research - you can too - giant price range,
lots and lots of mfgrs, in the end - figured this was
just fine for me.

I took this one step further, made a 3/8 plywood back for it,
painted to match. This stays on all the time.
Then I have a section that fits the "V", which is easily removable.

Purpose? I have a folding bed cover. With the "V" piece inserted,
nothing in the bed is visible (when I'm -not- towing).

This gate is very stout, (not aluminum) but lighter than a stock
tailgate.

I -never- lower the tailgate to hitch or un-hitch.

Oh yeah . . . Those Stromburg Carbs are also spelled "Stromberg", LOL!

Is anyone old enough to remember Stromberg-Carlson was quite the Hi FI Stereo Company in the early 1950's. They had beautiful cabinets made of real wood with first class components installed. I can't see the connection between electronics and tail gates, but I guess it's another way to make a buck!

JC - how did you attach the plywood to the gate? I have to get a V gate and it's a toss up with the inexpensive Stromberg Carlson or the one you have. Only about $40 difference, though.

Two reasons for this style of tail gate. Too have LESS weight and to make it easier to hook and unhook the fifthwheel. Not much else can matter.

Just for grins I weighed my S-C tailgate and found that it AND the weight of the aluminum running boards EQUAL the weight of the STOCK tailgate it replaced. I think that is a great trade off.

Stromberg-Carlson also made those big floor model radios back in the 40's. Setchell-Carlson also made televisions up till the mid 70's and seem to get some confused with the name. Great American products, too bad they are no longer around.

Yep, I remember the Stromberg-Carlson wood-cased radio my folks had before the days of television in the 40s. I thought of that old radio when I bought a set of quality steel folding steps for my trailer a few years ago with a Stromberg-Carlson label. If it's the same company, they surely have diversified.
