I don't have the license any longer but I drove a bus for what was once called SCRTD, (Southern California Rapid Transit District) in L.A. for about 4 years. When I first drove my new to me DP after many years of not driving a bus, it all came back to me. The training I received from them way back in the 70s stuck with me always and made me a better driver ever since. Happy trails.

Thank you for your replies. They are very informative! And I agree with lwmuddy, that the stories a charter bus driver could tell would be very interesting and some might have to be censored. It is fun though, and the bottom line is 99% of the people are great. The other 1% keep life interesting. I still would rather drive my "own bus" with just one passenger, rather than "their bus" with 50 or so! Happy and safe travels to all!

I currently hold a Class B with the following endorsements:
P = passenger
F = motorcycle
S = school bus (77 passenger)
N = tanker (used to drive water truck to fill pools)

currently drive a smaller "special needs" bus with a wheel chair lift, so behavior problems are usually handled by the aide on my bus.

I have a Class A CDL with a passenger endorsement. I'm retired from the federal government and have been driving busses for seventeen years. Charter busses, MCI, VanHools and Prevost for the first ten years. Now I drive Prevost Entertainer coaches out of Nashville, TN. I'm trying to stop, I've gotten to where I like to sleep in my own bed at night. During 2006, I spent 235 nights on the road. For the last three months I've been "helping out" our local transit system driving Gillig transit busses. Some of you know how that goes, a part time job turns into a full time job! Going to stop that next week also, time to go to Florida!

I have a CDL B from Florida. I got it 9 years before i ever set foot into a class A. But im glad i have it. Seems states are more and more leaning towards requiring some special license, but i think a B CDL will do fine for a while.

I have a Texas class B with a motorcycle endorsement, I used to drive school bus, but since I enjoy my sanity I don't drive them anymore.

Class B CDL, passenger, tank, & air-brakes (but no school bus endorsement), drove buses (from Hi-top wheelchair Dodges & E-450 cutaway vans to VanHool, MCI, & GMC coaches) for 3 years. Now, I drive a box truck.

Lwmuddy: did you ever drive a GMC 4106? I loved that bus.

We got our first RV when I was still a retired Boeing Engineer. It was an elderly 26' Class C. As it gradulally ate us out of house and home, we got rid of it (4 seasons ago) and regret not having one at present.

In that interim, I went to work for the county transit agency as an extra-board driver. These are the people that substitute for the assigned drivers whenever they take time off or other disasters strike. It's supposed to be part time.

After several months where my weekly average time behind the wheel was headed towards 55 hours, I decided this was a good place to be from. I still have the Class B ticket with air-brake and passenger endorsements, and I'm eternally grateful for the (paid) training on coaches up to 40 feet. There's no RV that would give me any concern, except for teaching DW how to handle one. She has embargoed anything bigger than 30'.

Anyone getting an RV over 30' should take lessons.
