In another thread I asked if it would be possible to exit via Naco where there is no Banjercito, and later turn in vehicle permit and hologram at Palomas--without taking my SUV back into Mexico. The one person who answered said no, the officials must see the vehicle. Of course, they did not see the vehicle when they handed me the hologram and instructed me to paste it on myself, but I realize that may just have been laziness.
I would like to ask about another possibilty. Since Sonora is a "free zone," is a vehicle permit required? If not, would it be possible to turn in the vehicle permit and hologram at a Bnjercito in, say, Guaymas or Magdalena, without running into trouble when exiting?

You can try South of Guaymas. They issue permits so maybe they will remove permits, the only place you can try. Magdalena has no place to issue or except permits.

They will hand you your permit for you to put on, but they DO come out to take it off.

I know you can get and turn in the "Sonora Only" permit at Empalme, south of Guaymas, and you can get the Federal TIP there too, so I'd think you could turn one in.

I thought any Banjercito could handle vehicle permits? In any event Empalme near Guaymas sounds like a distinct possibility since I plan to overnight there. I have sent an email to Banjercito hqs asking about this and, if it is answered, I will post it here.

Not true as far as I am aware! We got our all of Mexico permit in November of 2007 at KM 98 in Empalme. I asked them if I can turn it back into them and was told no, "You need to turn it in at KM 21 or any other border exit that has the facilities to take the sticker back. They gave me a list of the border crossings. They were very specific about not being able to turn it back into them at KM 98. Two years in a row I've been told this...

Chrispy, you are correct. I sent an email to Banjercito saying that I planned to leave Mexico via Naco, where the Bancercito office has been closed, and I had been informed that the office in Cananea was not open on Sunday afternoon. I asked if I could turn the vehicle permit in at Guaymas or Magdalena.
I just received an answer saying that I cannot turn the permit in at Guaymas. The sender suggested that I do so at Aguas Prietas.

Well, that's what I get for thinking logically.

Thanks for clearing that up, I'll add the info to my sticky.
