I think you are thinking about Old Fella when some of us sent funds to the vet to help relieve some of the cost of his initial medical treatment.
Contact RV Snowbird about how to properly handle donation requests on this forum. If not done properly, this thread could be closed.
I would be glad to help out a little.

Thank you for that DIXIESMAMA. I have been watching and ready to do just that. Per Forum Rules, specifically:
"Solicitations by private/public agencies, or individuals for any cause are also not allowed."
Yes, it was a problem in the Old Fella thread which had to be stopped. There is nothing wrong with discussing it in e-mail or private message however.

Thank you for that heads up, I thought that there may at some point be a problem with forum rules but I wasn't sure.
We'll wait and see what the prognosis is and go from there, maybe it won't be needed.
I was thinking when I first read this thread how so many times we spend hundreds and thousands of dollars saving our dogs from a deadly disease and the end result is the same.
So here comes a little puppy that could very well live a long and healthy life with this surgery but may not be able to get it because of dollars and it breaks my heart, I know we can't save them all.....
We'll keep an eye on this and proceed with the moderators approval if this is going to be a possibility.
Thanks, Sher

I never intended to solicite anything but awareness and ideas and maybe find new treatments that would give us a fighting chance of a quality life for the puppy. I spent 3 mo. finding just the right puppy from a reputable breeder. My grandchildren live with me and they had never had a puppy so for my 42nd wedding anniversary we drove 100 mi. to pick her up and were thrilled with her for a month. After her second near death weekend when she was 3 mo. old we signed the papers to have her put down because she was in critical condition and we didn't want her to suffer. The vet couldn't do it because she was up and looking a little better. At that point we decided to give her the best life we could and we are glad we made that decision. We love her a little more every day and are still searching for answers.

A sick pet stresses the family as much as a sick child. If it helps you to talk to us here, you have many people willing to offer encouragement, and were are more than willing to just listen. I know if I were about to loose one of my fur-babies and there was a surgery available but I couldn't afford the cost--I would be devastated.
Keep us posted.

I dont post much here but want to say that I am sorry to hear about your pup. My thoughts are with you. I volunteer for a rescue group and we had a liver shunt baby. her family could not afford the surgery and gave her up so that the group could save her knowing they would never see her again. It was very hard for the family, they gave her to us at 8 months. We had to take her to the imaging center and specialist quite a bit. She was on a lot of meds and special ID food. The group paid for the sugery but we paid for everything else. The surgeon was great and gave us a discount for rescues and said he would be willing to discuss the fees rather than have us postpone treatment. There is a vet school about 50 miles away that we could have tried as well.
In the end, our little rescue was adopted out and she now lives a normal healthy life. We send wishes for a happy ending for you all.

What were the results of your dog's bile acid test? Who told you he has a portal shunt? Did you have a scintigraphy done? This is a very serious condition. You can certainly do more than just make him comfortable. I will need more information before I can give you and advice. I have a Yorkie rescue and am very familiar with this disease.

I just wanted to let you know that even though I haven't responded to this thread until now (mainly because I lack experience in portal shunts)... You should not worry one little bit about anyone thinking you have "solicited" anything. You haven't asked for help, or posted your address, or given the vet's information... or anything that might be conceived to be a solicitation. There is a big difference in what you have been talking about and asking for donations! Please don't feel badly about that misunderstanding.
I can tell y'all love your little girl and will do whatever you can to make life good for her, I wish you and her the best of everything... especially when it comes to veterinary care.
Please keep us posted about your dog, there are a lot of people who care!

I don't have the bile acid numbers with me right now but the results were higher across the board than the orginal test of Dec. 23rd. From 6 weeks of age to 10 weeks she became increasingly more driven and hyper. Then one afternoon she went limp and was unresponsive. When I called my vet I was informed they no longer provided emergency care and I had to find a new vet on a Sunday. My new kind vet gave her antibiotics and sent her home and she improved over a 5 day period and then began circling and head butting and then biting over a 2 hour period. Back to the vet and he saw her and said he'd run test but he felt like it was the shunt and briefly explained what a critical issue it was. Then he called back the next day and said she was very weak and confirmed that all the blood test were indicators of the portal shunt. Then we signed the papers and she thankfully rallied. It has been a very emotional journey. No, we haven't had the scintigraphy, just an exray of a very small liver. She is just now stable enough to go to the next level and I will let you kind people know more when we do. Thank you all for the emotional support.
She is now 4 1/2 mo. and gaining weight and strength daily.
