I always carry an Actron code reader under the driver's seat.
Yes the odometer will give you the code but the code reader states what the code means. And if it is a "soft" code, the reader will erase it. (many Dodge CTD's have this Batt Temp Sensor fault that will keep lighting up the CEL. It can be reset by a code reader.)
"Hard" codes (the real nasty, engine damaging ones) will not be erased by a reader- the dealer needs to diagnose and fix those.
Good tool.

Makes a handy lie detector for the guy that is diagnosing your vehicle too.

Well, I bought the Innova 3100 scan tool yesterday. No codes came up but I was able to turn off the CEL. That should be good for a day or two and then I'll probably have to repeat the process. Dodge/Cummins is supposedly working on this glitch, common to many owners of these 3rd generation diesel trucks. In the meantime, the truck runs very well but it would be nice to see that CEL turned off permanently.

I was already aware of that and have used the key method before but prefer to have a device that can clear the error codes AND the CEL at the same time.

You may want to look at the Dashhawk PN13100. It is OBD1, 2, and CAN capable;it also resets all codes, it also reads all functions of the engine. It is not a tuner. You can look at their website.dashhawk.com/features.html or msd.com.This thing will do everything except kiss you. About $300.00 GOOD LUCK.

Thanks for the info, but the $98 scanner I bought at Wal*Mart does the same thing. So far, my CEL has remained off for about 4 days....almost a record (for me, that is) .

Having just had another "talk" with the manager of the dealer where I purchased my '07 6.7 CTD after my 10th visit since July, he informed me they would be contacting me soon as there will supposedly be a t.s.b. with a fix for the emissions glitch coming out Friday. Maybe you want to wait on the reader?

One that seems good referred to before
Bonus Features:
In addition to all of the parameters that can be displayed, diesel owners can purchase a thermocouple probe that connects to an additional sensor port on the OBDII connection and display EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature). Or the same connection can be used to input a wideband 02 sensor. And for owners of new diesels with diesel particulate filter (DPF) traps, the Insight displays DPF regeneration status.

Thanks for the info, Woodrow. I had heard about The Edge before but just didn't want to spent the $300+ at this time. I'm pretty satisfied with the $98 tool I purchased several days ago, although I realize it doesn't have all the features of The Edge. BTW, my CEL is still off after having erased it with the tool 4 or 5 days ago. I'm glad I have it and keep it under the back seat of my truck for quick evaluation when necessary in the future.
