I am looking to buy a 2008 2500HD crew cab 4X4 to haul our 8,000 lb trailer around. All the trucks my local dealer has in stock come with the 3:73 gears. I am looking for advice on whether the 4:10s are still recommended or will the 3:73s do the job with the new 6 sp transmission.

I don't do a large amount of towing, probably 6 or so trips during the summer.

Is it worth ordering a truck with the 4:10s and having to wait or should I just go for the 3:73s?

I could be wrong, but when I ordered ours the 4.10's were not even available in the 6 speed Allison..??

I do not think that Chevy/GMC gives you a choice on SRW 2500 series trucks, it is 3.73 or 3.73. Take your pick. I think 3.73 axles combined with the diesel/auto is probably about perfect when considing the tow rating of the 2500HD.

Depending on the motor choice, 3.73 is the only available ratio.

I had the 3:73's on my 2500HD with the 8.1 and Allison transmission and had no problems pulling a 5er that had a dry weight of almost 12000#'s. I think you would have no problem pulling that rig with 3:73's, however if you go a lot larger you might want to wait for the 4:10's. The general feeling is that you will only loose about 1/2 mpg with the 410's versus the 3:73 but you will probably get better mpg's towing.

I should have specified I am going with the 6.0 gasser. There is an option for 3:73 or 4:10 gears.

This statement is true only for the diesel trucks. With the 6.0 gasser, you have a choice of 3.73 or 4.10.

I'd go with the 4.10 if you can get it. See my signature. My 5er weighs in at 7200 (+-200) lbs loaded for the road, and while I'm ok with its performance I surely wish for a new diesel. That said, you will be towing a bit more than I and if you want to maximize your TV's performance get the 4.10

Good luck,

Since you are talking gasser, I would choose the 4.10 gears also. Don't take what the dealer maybe pushing, he is just trying to sell the trucks that are on the lot. Buy what you need/want. I know it is about impossible to find a manual transmission in a well equipped HD pickup these days, so sometimes you have to order it, probably much like trying to get optional gear ratios.

I was in the same boat as you as far as camping and towing requirements. We are waiting on our rockwood 8317SS.

For the towing vehicle, I went with 2008 GMC 2500HD Sierra 6.0l and 4.1 gears. Mine is a factory order as I'm not in a rush. They say it takes 6-8 weeks to get the vehicle with a factory order.

To me, it was rather obvious to get the 4.1 - from reading (as I don't have any experience with pick ups) the advantage is obvious. From a cost perspective, it is a $0 option. Yes, you might pay a little bit more in gas when not towing.
