Ok you those of you that in live in Montana are probably not going to like hearing this but DH and I are looking at purchasing some land and hopefully eventually tomove there. Yes most times when you retire you move south but being that he and I have grown up in the south and by my signature "To close to Atlanta to hate the traffic" we are wanting to get out of Dodge so to speak. We have been looking in and around the town of Shelby. Does anyone have any comments on that area. We have really just stared looking. We ordered and received information on the state and like what we see. So any input from those of you that live there would be great.
Thanks,
Michelle

Why wouldn't they like to hear it? Just post pictures of the property and directions how to get there and we'll all come camp with you

I guess living in Atlanta area all my life and in one of the fasest growing counties in America we roll our eyes when we hear talk of more people moving in. Don't want to scare them thinking a lot of us "Southern" folk are going to invade. .

You want to live up around Shelby, I would suggest you buy a airline ticket, right now to Kalispell Montana, rent a car and drive to Shelby. If you want Miserble cold, Wind, then this is the place for you. In the summer, it is not to bad, depends on what you can adapt to. Pretty flat country but it is what you make of it.

I owned a little piece of ground in Montana. All I gotta say is that you're going to freeze your butt.

You ain't the only one, Michelle! We've already bought a couple of acres in Lancaster, Ohio for a retirement home. It's a small town AND the birthplace of William Tecumseh Sherman and sounds like a great place to live after Atlanta.

Check out Cabela's Trophy Properties online. They list acreage throughout the country, including Montana, through affiliated realtors. Most of their listings are for fairly large parcels which may be more than you are looking for.

Use Google Earth and journey to Shelby. Wheat fields, sage brush and cacti. Wind blows almost constantly. Oh, and I think there may still be some oil wells working. Lived there when I was "knee high to a grasshopper". Also lived in Culbertson and Havre, MT (Dad worked for the Great Northern Railroad). The only place trees grow are along creeks and rivers and ranch house windbreaks. Plus it starts turning brown later in July (not much rainfall).
Take my advice and check out the Flathead valley area. Much more scenic and there is more culture. Just gotta watch out for the tourists during the "high season".
