Hi,
We are brand new to RVing and headed for Mexico in 1-2 weeks. Hope to travel down there for 6-8 weeks. We will be traveling in our "new to us" 24RB Born Free with no toad. Any words of wisdom? Also any recommendatios for supplies to bring, especially supplies and equipment specificaly related to traveling in Mexico? We traveled to Mexico two years ago in our 20 year old car and loved the people and had only positive experiences. Now I'm feeling more vulnerable driving a newer vehicle. Any tips on RV protection? What do you do if you're on a toll road and you see a car with flashing lights behind you? Thanks for any feedback you can offer us!

Send an email to sindicaturalogo@gmail.com and request a copy of the logo. Print it out and put one on the back of your rig and one on the drivers side of the wind shield. Corrupt police seem to avoid units with this logo on. For more information do a search on this web using the name "sindicatura logo"

Buffy & Chris ~ There are only a few things we have a difficult time finding in the smaller towns and pueblos. However, in the larger cities, especially at some of the big box stores like Wal-Mart, Sam's, and Cost-co, you can find about everything you need. I personally do not care for Mexican white wines (and yes they do have some outstanding imports) so I bring an ample supply of California domestic wine with us. Finding BBQ sauce, canned diced tomatoes, sharp cheddar cheese, and peanut butter can present a challenge in small markets. If you like lemon (the yellow ones) buy them whenever you see them because they are not always available. I also bring along my own horseradish, dejon mustard, and believe it or else, silly as it sounds, canned chile con carne. Hope my little list adds fun to your trip SOB. Viva Mexico!

Best regards,
Larry

Buffy & Chris,
Welcome to SOB and don't worry about the fear factor that some try to inject into travels here on the mainland. What would you do if you were speeding and a car pulled behind you in the US with flashing lights? You do the same down here, you pull over, stop and be polite but never pay any mordida(bribe), always insist on going to the station house.
Did you enjoy your trip last time, then there is no reason to worry and not enjoy this trip. Use the same common sense here you would in the States or Canada and you will have a safe and enjoyable trip. Just bring a healthy appetite and an inquisitive mind, for the time of your life. You are correct, the people are some of the best you'll meet anywhere.

BFRV, copy of Church's book, search this site/topic for info and post questions. There is so much info already posted it is impossible to cover in a single post. Search, search, search! Then ask, ask, ask questions. Mexico is a great adventure.

You didn't say where you plan to travel in Mexico, but there are lots of us here with new rigs of all makes and sizes. We have had no problems as a result of standing out, but we do our exploring by car and stay in parks with the motorhome.

I thought of developing some "snap on" body panels that are dented and rusted, which could be installed on a nice car as soon as you cross the border . Nobody would want to steal it.

I began taking my family SOB three years ago, despite the warnings from naysayer friends. I've never been worried, though, because several of my cousins have been RV'ing in Mexico for 30 years, with only one minor incident in all that time (a man hopped into a 5'er at a stop sign and took some clothing).

I don't have enough travel in Mexico under my belt to give you sage advice, but I feel pretty confident to say that you'll have a wonderful time and will want to go back again and again.

I think the best advice this year is to make reservations...we are in Mazatlan and it is almost impossible to get a spot...rigs are lined up to get into parks...

Best advice is go down the Highlands and return along the Coast.
