A position at lovely, historic Cape Henlopen State Park has just opened up. I've been here as Youth Camp Host since April and I love it! But, it's time for me to head South. So, I am posting so someone else can enjoy this wonderful work camping opportunity.

Details:

Youth Camp Host Summer 2008 to live and work in Youth Camp. 30 hours single, 24 hours each for couples. Duties: Welcome youth campers at check in, keep an eye on the Youth Camps when they are occupied by campers, check out campers when they leave, and various other duties such as light maintenance and light grounds keeping, etc. Weekends required. This is a fun position!

You will receive FHU, a beautiful, shady campsite in the dunes with a brand new laundry facility right across from your site. You will be within 5 min. walking distance to one of the Top 5 beaches on the East Coast (according to AARP Magazine).

About Cape Henlopen State Park:

Cape Henlopen's beaches attract thousands of visitors who enjoy ocean swimming and sunbathing. Two designated swimming beaches provide lifeguard patrols between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day. The northern swimming area also features a modern bath house with showers, changing rooms, and a food concession.

The park's open spaces feature many other activities. A picnic pavilion and the "Officer's Club" building can both be reserved for group events. An 18-hole disc golf course encourages friendly competition, and basketball courts promote more active exercise.

Cape Henlopen has many year-round hiking and biking opportunities. Experience the park’s scenic and ever-changing landscape — and get a lesson in history — along the three-mile-long paved trail that loops the park. Take a trail break and climb to the top of the World War II Observation Tower, where the 360-degree views are spectacular. Or take a short climb to the top of a former military bunker to view the dynamic action along the Atlantic coastline. Explore the coastal environment along the Seaside or the Pinelands Nature Trails, or hike the six miles of beach along the Atlantic Ocean.

She is right!! I am a local native and this area is beautiful. The views are breathtaking from the tallest sand dunes between North Carolina and Cape Cod If I wasn,t a full time worker, I would love to grab this position. A note to location. Just right down the street from the Cape May Lewes Ferry

Don't like the view?? Then change it and Go Camping

Yet another workamping "opportunity" where you pay almost $1000/month (at minimum wage) for your site. Sheesh!

No, not a workamping opportunity but a VOLUNTEER opportunity. Big difference. If you like to volunteer to help out the states/federal parks a great opportunity. If your looking to make a living, this is probably not for you.

Barb clearly is just one more who has no understanding of what it means to be a volunteer. I suppose that people who serve as Boy & Girl Scout leaders, ball coaches and all of those things are really foolish. Shoot when we did that we even had to pay our own expenses!

It isn't a barter position, but a volunteer position and if you fell that way, please don't take one of these spots.

Barb, I agree with Kirk.

Volunteering at a non-profit...that is... state, county, federal, city parks, wildlife refuges, etc is far different than workcamping or "volunteering" for a private entity. We volunteers are, many times, the only way our parks and lands are kept open and available for you, the public to enjoy.

We have been volunteering for 8 years and it is far more satisfying for us than workcamping. Terry and I put in many more hours than required when volunteering and we do it because we want to.

It is extremely difficult to explain the satisfaction we receive. To be able to live on a wildlife refuge or right on the beach is one of the many "perks". We have had more than 20 positions in our relatively short "career" and hope to have many more.

Pardon me for spouting off, but I consider this differential a "widow's penalty." I understand their point of view, but to me this is a slap in the face. I would love to be traveling with my late DH, but it is not to be ....

Huh? Are you saying 24hours for EACH member of a couple, but only 30hrs total for a single person? If so that's a "couple's" penalty, not a "widow's" penalty, isn't it? The single person needs to provide only 30 hrs of labor, while the couple must provide 48, no?
