My 98 chevy dually 454 gas (277K miles) gets 10 mpg around town, 5 or 6 towing the adrenaline loaded with goodies. Last year it handled a trip from WA state to South Dakota to St Anthonys to Coos Bay back to WA.

It is a matter of speed. At 55 mph in 16th gear running 1400 rpm I get 10 mpg ( in cali).
In 18th gear running 70 mph at 1200 rpm I will get 11.5 mpg (in other states).

The truck is a 2000 Freightliner FLD120
Cat C-16 set to 600hp at 2100 rpm and 2050 ft lb of torque at 1200 rpm. Pre-Acert (last of the Big Dogs)
18 speed tranny and 2.90 rear end ratio.

No modifications to motor, 17K miles;

- unloaded, mix of conditions (50-50 streets, highway) = 15.8mpg
- unloaded, 90% freeway at 65 mph = 19.6mpg
- loaded trailer (150 gal water, 5 bikes, wood in truck, etc.) = 10.2 mpg @ 58 mph while going over the Tehachapis.
- loaded trailer without bikes, all of the stuff that goes with them and all of that water = 12.8mpg

Hand calculated. I've tried different speeds, but have learned to watch the tach more than the speedo. For mileage purposes 1600-1800 seems to work well.

Worth noting that I have 3.73 rearend with 265x70x16 BFGoodrich AT (Load Range D) and the 6-speed Allison (IRC, 6th gear is .73). Expecting to get better milage with my next set of tires (Nitto DuraGrapplers).

I get 13-15 mpg around town empty, depending on type runs. Loaded I have seen anywhere from 7-10 mpg towing depending on terrain. I never exceed 65 mph towing.
