A RCA jack is also called a PHONO plug, the mini-headphone jack is a PHONE plug one letter different. I know the difference well and have dozens of each type here
If you have a piece of high end audio gear, or for that matter a VCR the audio/video in/out jacks are commonly RCA.
I suspect RCA was first to use them but have never researched the name
PHONE comes from the days of switch boards, the kind with cables and plugs and sockets where the operator would say "Number Please" and then patch your call through to whomever you wished to talk to. The 1/4 inch plugs had a Ring, Tip and Sleeve (Same as a quarter inch stereo headphone plug) and in fact, can be used to replace a quarter inch stereo phone plug, they are identical, though a bit better built
A good portion of those old switch boards, should you find one in the trash, is worth it's weight in Gold. I'm not kidding here, it is exactly worth it's weight in Gold. (Not the entire board, just the gold parts)
To last time I had major phone line word done the lineman hooked up the wires backwards at the pole.. He was still atop the ladder when I ask him if he knew what a Ring-Tip reversal was and he fixed it right off. (Red and Green wires reversed in case you wonder)
