My boss (at Work, not home) swears that by putting ice in the garbage disposal and turing it on will sharpen the blades! I can't wait to shapen my axe with a chunk of ice next camping trip.

..While I agree that some are a bit anal (pun intended, LOL) about the cleanliness of their waste tanks, I've read about, and really like the GEO method/approach, was thinking of switching to it.
Maybe I don't understand the GEO method right, but I don't recall reading anywhere, that you put bleach in the tank! If it did involve such, doubt I would consider it. My understanding is, all you put in there is a little detergent of some kind strictly to help with odors, and some Calgon water softener. As long as it works, seems like a great approach. Are you supposed to add bleach, also? I missed that part, if so...
as I understand it from the official geo method - if there is such a thing... bleach is part of the formula... but a lot of people have just used their own formulas for different reasons...
some can't find calgon so they use and suggest fabric softener in it's place because they can find it...
water softeners can help a little, but there are other wetting agents out there that would do the same thing or more...
the point is, water is the best solvent known to man and given enough of it is all that is needed in our holding tanks... if everything is working right and the tank is dumped and flushed with water, odor should not be a problem...

1) Within seconds of dumping the ice into your tank there will be no sharp edges on the ice pieces. No abrasive qualities at all.
2) H2O is a mediocre solvent at best and it's even worse at a low temperature.
I wish this myth would die. Must have been started by a ice cube company. Seriously folks, anyone with a highschool education should be able to realize how silly it is to expect a bag of ice to clean the kind of crude that would be fouling the level probes in a RV black tank.
If you want to clean out that tank you need to get to the other side of the temperature range. Dump your tanks on the hottest day of the year, put a cup of liquid Tide down the head, fill it half full, and drive around all day.

It may be a myth in some eyes, but when my gages started reading full when empty, I used the ice trick and IT WORKS. The next time they acted up, it worked again. So my college education must mean I'm dumb for thinking that a solid cube bouncing off the tank side walls as you drive, would have an effect on knocking solids off the sensors. Sorry for being so dumb, but I'll subscribe to the, it works theory.

Garbage disposal works by squeezing soft garbage between movable hammers and screen around. In another words, no cutting edges. However crushed ice could clean algae from the screens.
When I remodeled my coach, I never hooked up sensor to the display. All I have to do is take a look down in the toilet to see how much I have left. With over 30 gal black tank we never come even close to filling it up. My tank has funnel-shaped bottom that ends with the dump pipe. Have never, ever used any flushing even on other motorhomes with square tanks.
I wonder when this topic will get to advise about black tank perfumes?

I can vouch for that method. I did it once, and it got my sensors working. Using plenty of water whenever I have hookups keeps them working.

You have to remove the toilet first and then just shove the bag down the hole.
Don't forget to save a few cups of the ice for cleaning away those stubborn tea and coffee stains on your drinking mugs. I know that's what I always reach for. Works real good on tile grout too.
